Using some time-trickery, this episode does a great bait and switch on who is "the hero of their own story". But as we peel back the layers, even though it appears as though #TheCommonwealth is being goaded into a bigger conflict than #LanceHornsby (the instigator) anticipated, #FatherGabriel's sermon reminds us that, ultimately, we're all the same and that we must have faith in the idea of The Commonwealth as #TheWalkingDead's endgame.
You'd be surprised at how many yucks we left out of the final edit of this #podcast, even though we kept so many in. We also took some more time to expand on some ideas and had a pretty *interesting* pre/post-show you don't want to miss. To get access to the unedited recording and so much more, head here:
Back when we thought this would be Episode 182
(Episode 182 ended up being Dave's chat with Sarabeth Pollock)

πŸŽ–SURVIVORS TIER MEMBERS:
Jasmine:

  • SQUAWKING DEAD are The Not-So-Lucky Ones, discussing two episodes within two days.
  • Rachael: A lot of good nuggets, and an intriguing story.
  • Sherrandy: Reminiscent of the Season 10 bonus episode One More (10x19), with a pseudo callback Duane Jones Bourbon Whiskey.
  • Jasmine: Episode felt quick, but a second viewing did wonders. Loved the character of Toby Carlson.
  • Is Lance Hornsby creating his own army?
  • Who hijacked the caravan of weapons? Leah Shaw? The Ferals
  • Rachael: Could it be a "normal" group of cannibals? a la The Termites (from Terminus)
  • Should we feel bad for "warlord" Ian?

  • Though we glean more rationale from Maggie Rhee, is she justified in being the sole decision-maker on behalf of The Hilltop? Lydia mentions everyone should have a say.
  • Is Annie the new leader of The Riverbend community?
  • Again, would it be better if Lance was running The Commonwealth, over Pamela Milton?
  • Dave: Carlson is a dark mirror of Aaron.
  • Carlson proves it's possible to re-civilize and even thrive, but falls into old "tracks" when the opportunity presents itself.
  • What is going through Aaron’s head when Carlson slaughters Ian?
  • Jasmine: Riverbend & The Hilltop are on the border between Ohio and West Virginia.
  • Father Gabriel Stokes mentions the story of "The Prodigal Son" in his sermon, reminding Rachael of Negan's redemption.
  • Does Maggie still seek vengeance upon Negan, or is it just out of obligation, at this stage?
  • Is Lance a sociopath?
  • What is Lance’s side project?
  • Who is Lance truly fighting for?
  • Lance refers to Alexandria Safe-Zone, Hilltop, and Oceanside as "hick communities" to Carlson, but speaks highly of them to Pamela.
  • How long have Lance and Pamela known each other? What is the pre-apocalypse relationship?
  • The Walking Dead allows you to become the person you were meant to be, but what about The Commonwealth?
  • What made Gabriel’s sermon so emotional to you?
  • Is it better to live in a world that is free from corruption, but nothing gets done and life is awful, or a world where everyone thrives, but there's some corruption?
  • Is Carlson still convinced these people attacked the caravan?
  • Do The Commonwealth troopers blindly follow orders or do they have some knowledge on Lance/Carlson's orders?
  • Who will Mercer side with if he has to show up with back up?
  • Was it Lance's plan to frame an unstable Carlson for this assault on Riverbend the whole time?
  • Who has the guns from the hijacked caravan?
  • Did The Commonwealth Trooper walkers come from the caravan or the apartment complex?
  • Could the caravan attack have possibly even come from within (staged by Lance)?
  • Welcome back Marco!
  • Aaron's iPhone is an upgrade from the photographs he used to convince bush-beard Rick Grimes and co to come to Alexandria in Season 5.
  • Could also be a callback to the Michonne & Judith Grimes etching on the phone Michonne finds on the cruiser in Season 10, Episode 13, What We Become.
  • Gabriel sermon is a lesson: we are all the same - we all have free will - and we all want the best for our people. We just have to believe in what this place could be and fight for that belief, together.

Originally Recorded: 2022/10/13

What this conversation was supposed to be about was #TWD S11(A), thus far, and what, as a result, we might see in the latter trimesters of #TheWalkingDead's 11th and final season. What it became was a holistic analysis of #TWDUniverse on the whole! Luckily, we were able to channel all of that discussion back into the subject at hand, which made for a stupendous conversation!
I know we talk a big game about our Unedited Episode Recordings, but this is one you will definitely want to watch/listen to: especially in the beginning, we talk about things most definitely not fit for public consumption! 🍡Tea was spilled! Want access to it whilst supporting the BEST #TWDU #podcast out there? Head here:

Sarabeth Pollock:
David Cameo:

  • The difficulty of discussing an episode when there are AMC screeners, AMC+ releases, and public airing on AMC networks.
  • How do we avoid leaks in a time where we're covering two episodes a week for 10 weeks, straight?
  • Why do people choose to spoil things?
  • Is the current TWDU release schedule overwhelming?
  • Sarabeth Pollock has been doing live recaps since True Blood!
  • Her visit to the set of The Walking Dead: World Beyond!
  • Instant vs Delayed Gratification.
  • The Walking Dead Universe: You get a spinoff! You get a spinoff! You get a spinoff!
  • Fear The Walking Dead reinvents itself every three seasons:
    • Seasons 1-3 deal with the start of the Zombie Apocalypse
    • Seasons 4-6 deal with trying to live amidst the Zombie Apocalypse, when the dust settles.
    • So far, Season 7 deals with nuclear fallout.
  • Would it be satisfying to have certain characters return after they've disappeared for a long while, like Alex and Tobias?
  • Why do people hate-watch shows?
  • How does binging a show versus watching week-to-week affect a viewing experience?
  • Julia Ormond was hidden from set visitors!
  • The second half of Fear TWD Season 6 was filmed out of order because Alycia Debnam-Carey was in Australia for a chunk of it (due to COVID-19).
  • Is the anthology format of Fear The Walking Dead better for the show?
  • Did being a fan of TWDU change our perspective of the pandemic?
  • Can you live a good life in the midst of a zombie apocalypse?
  • What happens if you put all of the kids from TWDU in a room?
  • Can FTWD or TWD:WB sometimes be more satisfying because there is no clear roadmap to follow?
  • Was TWD Season 11(A) less satisfying due to a lack of closure?
  • Perhaps too many storylines: the struggles of Alexandria Safe-Zone, the journey to Meridian, Connie & Virgil versus The Ferals, Daryl Dixon & Leah Shaw, The Reapers, Maggie Rhee versus Negan, The Commonwealth, and more.
  • Do we need all the references in the comic book reflected in the television show to feel satisfied?
  • What will Leah's role be in 2nd & 3rd trimesters of Season 11 (assuming she makes it to the latter trimester)?
  • As opposed to an actual a human being, how does one defeat a dangerous idea?
  • Is Leah trying to assume Pope's role?
  • Could Leah be swallowed up by her past?
  • Can one find peace twice?
  • Is the possibility of Leah joining our group even possible in light of The Reapers killing Roy & all of Meridian's Wardens (Duncan, Agatha, Frost, and Cole).
  • What is all of this fighting even for?
  • What does it say about The Walking Dead that they can still introduce new and interestingly complex characters this late into the game?
  • What if The Commonwealth storyline is changed due to the introduction of the The Civic Republic (Military)?
  • Is Yumiko Okumura better suited for Michonne’s comic book arc?

What is luck? Is it forged? Is it random? Where was it when #MaggieRhee's subsequent communities fell and while on the road with #HershelRhee? And what about #LanceHornsby, a nobody who believed in himself so much he became someone indispensable to #TheCommonwealth?
We tell some deeply personal stories in the pre-show and expand on so much more in the Unedited Episode Recording of this #podcast. It's definitely well worth the watch/listen. To get eyes on it while supporting one of the BEST #TWDUniverse #podcasts, head here:

  • Is Lance Hornsby wrong?
  • Bridget discusses The Devil’s Coin Flip.
  • What is the cost of survival?

THE COST OF SURVIVAL

  • Why does Maggie make the decision to decline the offer from The Commonwealth?
  • Is it when Maggie sees Daryl Dixon fall in line/formation at Mercer's beck and call?

  • Pamela was in philanthropy and crossed paths with Deanna Monroe.
  • When is it okay to give up?
  • Is Maggie wrong?
  • Do we want things to return to the way they were?
  • Can these characters really maintain their freedom?
  • Can they truly even leave The Commonwealth?
  • Is a safe place even possible (calling back to our discussions during FearTWD Season 6)?
  • Is The Commonwealth the endgame for our characters (like it is in the comic book)?

  • What will it take for you to finally ask for help?
  • Should Maggie take the deal for the sake of her people?
  • Would you go to The Commonwealth?
  • Where do you draw the line for helping people or not helping people?
  • Revisiting whether Pamela is really ignorant of the comings and goings on in The Commonwealth?

  • Lance Hornsby is the resident Saul Goodman (from Breaking Bad) of the TWDU.
  • Why aren’t we instinctually not rooting for Hornsby (even though some of us kind of are)?
  • We say "Goodnight Jasmine!" as we tell her to go to bed, Jasmine.

THE MAGICAL DELIGHTS OF ANGELA KANG

  • Watch Dave's reaction to this episode before continuing:
  • Where is Leah Shaw?
  • Where is Negan?
  • Were you at least initially mad at Max (like Dave was)?
  • Angela Kang is taking our jobs!
  • Perspective is key: watching things from Max's point of view really helped him see her side of things.
  • Max and Eugene Porter have a similar fashion taste (she is wearing a Keep Wisconsin Cheesy t-shirt, according to production stills)!
  • The Walking Dead starring Aidan as Eugene and Aidan as Max. Coming sooner than you'd expect!
  • Why did Eugene hide what happened with Shira (AKA Fake Stephanie) from Rosita Espinosa?
  • What is Mercer afraid of?

NOW SERVING EZEKIEL SUTTON

  • Does Ezekiel deserve a little luck?
  • Is it better to die in the horrors of the apocalypse or waiting for a surgery?
  • Is Carol Peletier the answer for The Commonwealth, as it currently operates?
  • Why would Rachel Ward handcuff The Oceanside to The Hilltop?
  • Where is Cyndie?

At 1900 hours, or Seven in the PM, we're going 11x11 on your asses. This episode introduced a satisfying amount of frustration (we know how that sounds): between the deception wrought upon #EugenePorter (on behalf of #StephanieVega / Shira / #MaxineHawkins), the larger deception of #TheCommonwealth on #Mercer (and Connie/Kelly), and #LanceHornsby showing his cards to #CarolPeletier.
We definitely cut out a lot of hijinks and extended conversations (not to mention rampant technical difficulties - which are hilarious in their own way) in the pre-show, post-show, and even throughout the episode! This is definitely an unedited episode recording you do not want to miss out on! You can stream it, now, and all Early Access Unedited Episode Recordings by supporting us, here:

INITIAL THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS

  • Was this episode boring?
  • Aliza: Eugene Porter's Shakespearean monologue, Connie in peril? And the Oscar goest to: Josh McDermitt
  • Jasmine: A rewatch can do this episode wonders.
  • Why did Shira let things go too far?
  • Rachael: Questions finally answered?
  • Is there an actual Stephanie Vega?
  • #CarolBeCaroling
  • Bridget: Was this episode inspired by Alfred Hitchcock?
  • We see each character in The Commonwealth through the various perspectives of our characters.
  • Sherrandy: The writers have been experimenting with different styles; this episode feels like a spy thriller, while 11x06 "On the Inside" felt more like a horror movie.

BLUE WEEVIL TO TATER BUG

  • Why does Max (Maxine Hawkins?) come to Eugene, at the end?
  • How does Shira know what Eugene said on the radio?
  • How did Eugene not catch Shira in her lies?
  • Was Max caught while talking to Eugene?
  • Was Max in on Lance Hornsby's plan?
  • Similar to Fear the Walking Dead Season 2, with Jack tricking Alicia Clark into letting him board The Abigail.
  • How long has Max been Pamela Milton's assistant?
  • Are Lance, Max, Shira, and the rest of The Plumbers Union working to take down the class divide within The Commonwealth?
  • History repeats itself: widening class divides always leads to revolution.
  • Will Magna join the resistance?
  • Was Max blackmailed by Hornsby?
  • Aliza: Could Shira, Max, and Mercer all be related?
  • Next episode, TWD: The Musical!
  • Bridget: Only Eugene gets catfished in the apocalypse!
  • Sherrandy performs a little Les MisΓ©rables!
  • Did the episode leave the audience with more questions than answers?
  • How long were Eugene & Max been communicating over the radio, singing When the Wind Blows by Iron Maiden?
  • What is Tyler Davis being charged with?
  • Names on the paper given to Connie: Garrett Immel (makeup artist), Ramon Guzman (art department), Kirk Riley (stunt performer).
  • Denise Huth (Executive Producer) was previously used as The Governor's wife and Tom Luse (Executive Producer) was used as Pamela Milton's dad.
  • Connie is in The Truman Show.
  • What kind of document did Eugene actually sign and was it similar to the document Editor Jan
    mentioned Tyler Davis signed?
  • Was Tyler banished?

LANCE HORNSBY FOR GOVERNOR

  • Lance doesn't want the Alexandrians to see the Commonwealth and their communities as separate, but refers to them as different during his confrontation with Eugene.
  • Has Lance been moving people up to gain their loyalty?
  • Is Lance moving people up or promising to?
  • What does Moto's community need money for if they aren't a part of the Commonwealth?
  • Does Lance want Alexandria to be a Commonwealth outpost?
  • Will Moto's arrest tip-off The Commonwealth to Lance's shady dealings?
  • How much does Pamela really know?
  • Does all the opium go to the hospital?
  • 2.5 acres typically produces between 17.6 to 36 pounds per season.
  • Is Lance trying to wrestle control of The Commonwealth from Pamela?
  • Could Lance be a better leader, since he worked his way to the top?
  • Does The Commonwealth even hold (free & fair) elections? Sounds a lot like Tweedism (named after Boss Tweed, who's philosophy was "I don't care who does the electing, as long as I get to do the nominating.").
  • The Hilltop formula: Maggie Rhee to Gregory, Paul "Jesus" Rovia to Maggie, Tara Chambler to Jesus. Comparing these two second-in-commands: Simon to Lance.
  • Aidan (in the chat): Makes you wish Deanna Monroe was still alive.
  • Aliza Standard Time: Aliza leaves us.
  • Cult of Personality takes precedence over a candidate's policy-positions, just ask anyone in the debate between John F. Kennedy & Richard Nixon.
  • Is it harder to come back and re-civilize as opposed to losing it in the first place? Bridget is reminded of the Hatchet series of books, by Gary Paulsen.

GENERAL MERCER

  • How similar are Mercer and Lance?
  • Tyler Davis was being held in hospital room M33, which is the Master Number in Numerology.
  • What if Tyler becomes a martyr?
  • "You Mother Puss Bucket" - Moto quotes Bill Murray's Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters.
  • Michael Cudlitz (who played Abraham Ford) directed this episode!

DETECTIVE EUGENE ON THE CASE

  • Eugene tacked the waffle cone left in his hands the day "Stephanie" disappeared onto the serial killer board
  • The clock hands in the town square are broken, providing an illusion of time or that even time, as a system (like The Commonwealth's society), is broken.
  • Juanita "Princess" Sanchez's imaginary lasagna!
  • As Jasmine leaves us, let's talk Princess: Is she painfully aware of what is going on with Eugene? Bridget & Aidan share how their lives connect with the story Princess tells Eugene.
  • Eugene's Kansas City: World's Best Barbeque shirt is reminiscent of his Virginia is for Lovers shirt in The Walking DeadSeason 5. Also similar to Morgan Jones' Don't Mess with Texas shirt he receives from Grace Mukherjee in Fear The Walking Dead, Season 5.

  • Does Lance see himself in Carol Peletier?
  • Is Lance unintentionally training his replacement?
  • Could Lance be crushing on Carol?
  • Is Lance planning to use the new Alexandria Safe-Zone recruits to enact his plans?
  • Why does Max show up now?
  • What is Max risking by approaching Eugene?
  • Why should Eugene believe Max?
  • Could Max have been banned from speaking with Eugene after falling in love with him?
  • What is this plan's endgame?
  • Are The Commonwealth and the Civic Republic Military aware of one another?
  • Is Pamela the modern version of Gregory?
  • Don't care, where's Rick Grimes.
  • How will Princess react to finding out that Eugene was right?
  • Was disappearing "Stephanie" really as stupid a plan as it sounds?
  • Can an admission of temporary emotional/mental distress be held against them?
  • How Could Max let this happen to Eugene?
  • Proof of economic deflation in The Commonwealth Tribune (Issue 523: which indicates they are 10-years into publication).

DECONSTRUCT #THECOMMONWEALTH! …From their economic system to systemic inequality (both spoken and unspoken). Dave's obsession with "allowance". • What did Pamela Milton do before the apocalypse?
  • What if Primrose is but a 3rd dimension that serves as the foundation of The Commonwealth? Because what comes after The Commonwealth storyline?
