[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 13 of The Walking Dead, "Chokepoint"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

Fresh off of their escape from the Whisperer Camp, episode 13 of Season 9 of The Walking Dead entitled "Chokepoint" continues exactly where we left off as Daryl, Connie, Henry, Lydia and Dog are on the run from Alpha and her minions.  At the same time, we finally get answers to who in the world is behind that cryptic street sign that King Ezekiel and Carol passed by after their movie theater quest.  And they seem be just as big of a fan of movies as they are (who would've thought?)!

More importantly though, we get to see the aftermath of the walker attack on the Whisperer camp, specifically the moment where one young Whisperer male who has a mortal bite wound on his neck is having a few words with Beta.  He knows he doesn't have long to live and he tells Beta that he's going to join the Guardians isn't he?  Beta knows that his death is imminent, but out of seemingly respect for this young man, he provides some comfort by touching his shoulder and telling him he'll always be "one of us".  He then instructs one of the other Whisperers to find his wife and let her know he will soon be going through "the change".  It's quite fascinating to see that the Whisperers truly view the walkers as their protectors or "Guardians" and how dying is not so much as the end but as a rite of passage to another level of existence where you become a protective deity.  Almost religious in thought process.  Beta does state however that they need to track down Daryl and crew because if they don't hand over Lydia, they should all prepare to join the Guardians personally.  Yikes.

Meanwhile, Daryl and crew are on the run with Lydia in tow, against all his wishes.  Henry, however, is insistent on Lydia staying with them no matter he may think of it.  Connie seems to be in agreement and suggests on a location that she thinks is a good option for them to go to find refuge, at least for the time being.  Daryl has no choice but to follow since it appears that everyone is on board with this plan and promptly follow Connie.  The location turns out to be an abandoned mid-rise building that seems to have been in the midst of construction and/or renovation.  Connie recommends to Daryl that they get to higher ground and use this position as a Chokepoint, in an attempt to pick off the Whisperers when they eventually track them down (since they will certainly find them).  Daryl is impressed with the idea and Lydia informs them that Beta and some Whisperers will likely come out to try and find her.  After Lydia confirms that Beta is their best fighter, Daryl states that then they'll make sure to kill him first.  Lydia looks surprised, likely knowing that they are SEVERELY underestimating the brute strength that is Beta.

On a happier note, preparations for the fair are very much underway at the Kingdom, as Queen Carol and Nabila take a lay of the land observing all the colorful flags and decorations set up.  This positive moment is cut short however (naturally, this is the post apocalypse after all) by the arrival of a slightly wounded Jerry with what essentially is a ransom note (though a grammatically correct one).  It appears that they were hijacked while on the road and threatened by a group of men who claim to "own" the roads leading to the Kingdom and stated that anyone who wants to travel those roads to the fair need to be prepared to pay their "toll" or else.  King Ezekiel is extremely frustrated at the idea of having to participate in more violence in order to have a peaceful fair but Carol is optimistic that perhaps these are educated men that can be reasoned with.  This is different for Carol right?  On that note, the Kingdom gathers its best fighters (I mean, listen, they have to be save and have a plan B in case it all goes south) and they're off to meet with this new apparent threat.

They arrive at this lair which appears to be some sort of warehouse space of some sort.  From their vantage point, they can see that it appears that the men are armed.  With that in mind, they prepare themselves to negotiate but with the understanding that this could get ugly very quickly.  They enter the warehouse and one specific man stands out from the group giving off the impression that he is the leader.  At first glance, they're a pretty odd bunch: They call themselves the Highwaymen and they are fully armed but decked out in what appear to be almost costumes with cowboy hats and all (and I swear that there was someone in that group dressed in a Sgt Pepper's outfit).  He informs them that the deal was to meet with ONLY the king but Carol pipes in that there was never any deal in place.  Touche.  She and Ezekiel make their case that they do not want any trouble, instead they would rather come up with a resolution that makes everyone happy.  They propose that the Highwaymen PROTECT their roads and in exchange, they are free to attend the fair and participate in the exchange of goods.  The leader of the group laughs at this offer, finding it ridiculous.  The Highwaymen start to get their weapons ready...until they realize that the Kingdom came prepared and has them surrounded.  They still do not fully back down however and it's at this point that Carol steps up and tries a different tactic.  She asks them a simple question: When was the last time you guys have seen a movie?  The Highwaymen stand there stunned.  MIND BLOWN.

It seems that the Highwaymen are big film buffs and that was all the bargaining that was needed.  We then cut to seeing the convoy of people from the Hilltop on their way to the fair getting ambushed by a herd of walkers.  Luckily our group hold their own but they are assisted by of all people, the Highwaymen who come bounding in on horseback, monkey wrenches in hand (GENIUS WEAPON) and neutralize the remaining threat.  When asked who they are they state that they are the Highwaymen and they are here to be their escort to the fair.  Tara stares at him in utter shock and disbelief...and perhaps some recognition?  Hmmmm...

But the "main event" is back at the abandoned building with Daryl and crew.  Connie shares with him a map of the building as well as a hidden flooring hatch where Magna's crew had hid some emergency supplies, in case they ever returned to this building.  With the aid of Connie's building map, they develop a plan to lay traps around the building in order to lead the Whisperers where they need them and eventually (hopefully) pick them off, one by one.  Daryl finds Lydia's presence a problem that they'll need to ditch immediately but Connie is advocating for Lydia to stay with them.  When Daryl argues that she'll get their friends killed, Connie is quick to inform him that she has no friends and they are the fortunate ones.  For now, they agree to disagree.  Eventually, the Whisperers are spotted from one of the terraces and Daryl ends up shooting the recently deceased and turned Whisperer male from the beginning of the episode.  Beta looks down at him and then looks up at the terrace, right at Daryl.  Eerie.

In the meantime, Lydia and Henry are in a separate location, preparing for the eventual arrival of the Whisperers into the building.  Henry has sharpened a poll from the coat closet for her to defend herself.  She is resistant to accept it, however, because she tells him that these Whisperers almost raised her and looked after her and since they are her people, she can't really kill them.  Talk about conflicted.  It's for that reason that Daryl interrupts their smooch session (ah, young love) and promptly locks Lydia and Dog in a closet, since she really can't be trusted on what should could do in this situation.  As expected, here is where the action begins since a handful of Whisperers enter the building with walkers and separate themselves from the herd to head up the stairs and find our crew.  One crew enters the floor where Henry and Connie are and begin their ambush.  Connie seems really adept at capitalizing on her other (spidey) senses and she proves to be a formidable fighter in this action sequence.  Henry also holds him own, until he is stabbed in the leg.  Luckily for him, Lydia managed to use a nearby crowbar to get out of the closet and Dog promptly attacks his attacker and he's saved.  Henry apologies to Lydia for trying to kill Whisperers to which she reassures him that it's okay.

But people, are we ready to rumble??  Because we're about to join Daryl on his floor.  Daryl has set up shop on a floor that looks was in the midst of renovation. Dust tarps are hanging around the area and there are random power tools strewn around as well.  All of a sudden, three Whisperers including Beta using the door as a shield, burst into the room.  Daryl makes quick work of two of Whisperers, burying an ax into one of them (gruesome) and slitting the throat of one of the other guys.  But then, like a horrific Kool Aid man, Beta comes through the drywall and the drag out bar fight begins.  Beta manhandles the smaller Daryl around the room, throwing him into the wall and onto the floor.  At one point, he even had his neck over a table saw.  Daryl is though, scrappy as anything, and is able to fight him off at every turn, even when the towering man is standing across from him with his massive knives.  Both men employ some fancy footwork during this knife fight sequence and Daryl is able to stab Beta in the upper chest area with a switchblade but the hulking man keeps going as of nothing occurred at all.  In a last ditch effort, Daryl manages to hide in the floor boards and notices beyond Beta an elevator shaft.  He then jumps out of hiding and runs into Beta, pushing him down into the elevator shaft.  Daryl spits down the shaft and thinks his work is done.

He then exits the building with the rest of his crew and decides that Lydia can indeed stay with them but the safety of the communities is of paramount importance, so they'll need to figure out what their next move (or location) will be.  Unbeknownst to all of them however, is that Beta woke from unconsciousness and is standing on top of the elevator in the shaft, livid and full of rage, and ready for his next move.  They better start running and they better start fast.

[RECAP] Season 10, Episode 5 of The Walking Dead, "What it Always Is"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Little pig, little pig...LET ME IN.  So after episode 5 of this season of The Walking Dead, are more fans FINALLY letting Negan into their black little hearts?  I certainly hope so!  This episode continues to follow Negan on his wild journey to redemption (with a sort of “Oh Brother Where Art Thou” vibe), albeit an unconventional one.  While this is certainly the main storyline, episode 5 is filled with substance from various storylines all happening at the same time, set on a sure fire collision course, and the repercussions are still very much undetermined at this point.

But let’s go through each specific storyline since we have quite a few to get through:

GAMMA & THE WHISPERERS...& AARON
We get to see Gamma again and, via some conversations between Gamma, Alpha and Beta, we get confirmation that the Whisperers are indeed behind some of the various nefarious incidents that have occurred (the tree falling on the Hilltop’s border, the waves of walkers on Alexandria, etc).  Alpha is essentially playing the long game and is trying to wear down our heroes to a point of submission and/or to a point where conquering them will be an easy feat.

As an additional point of wearing down our heroes, Gamma has been tasked with essentially poisoning the water supply by spilling walker guts and blood into the river.  Biowarfare is a very real thing folks.  We do see however cracks in the membrane as Gamma has a momentary breakdown and lets out all her pent up frustration over the ways of The Whisperers, the death of her sister, all on her walker “Guardian” (a fellow Whisperer that was brutally murdered by Alpha by offering their feedback...no democracy here).  In her stabbing ferocity, she accidentally gives herself a pretty bad gash on her hand...only to be thrown some gauze by a hovering Aaron (who shares that he’s from Vermont...interesting right?).

Like a little timid mouse, Gamma silently takes the gauze and scurries away back to the Whisperer camp.  She seems almost afraid to show Alpha her bandaged hand, in fear that Alpha might see that as a betrayal.  Instead, Alpha sees this as another calculated opportunity to potentially entice Aaron and find yet another way to attack Alexandria and the Hilltop via another source.  But who’s side is Gamma ultimately on?

KELLY & MAGNA
The start of the episode focuses on Kelly wandering in the woods, roaming around in a bit of a muffled daze, further illustrating the deterioration of her hearing.  And why was she out there?  Apparently to hide goods and supplies, in conjunction with Magna, who has been in on this whole thing for some time.  Ultimately they are found and retrieved by Daryl and Connie (more on that later) and when Yumiko finds out that Kelly and Magna were swiping supplies, she’s not surprised.  It’s at this moment that we find out that Magna had been in jail for seemingly acting in retaliation toward an attacker of her niece (it’s not clear if the crime toward her niece was a murder, a rape, etc) and she still seems to harbor a sense of mistrust of everyone in general (hence the secret stockpiling).  Magna also seems to have a bit of chip on her shoulder that Yumiko was this (apparently) fancy pants lawyer with fancy degrees before the world fell apart and throws that back in her face, which seems to really hurt her.

So where do we go from here with this information?  I’m not quite so sure...getting all this backstory would make one think that it has to be relevant for a reason but what the reason is yet is still not quite clear (at least not to me).

DARYL & CONNIE
Ah, Connie and Daryl.  Or “Donnie” as many wishful fans call the two.  They go out in the woods to find Kelly, once it’s known that she’s gone missing.  During the tracking in the woods, these two continue to get to know each other more by way of sign language and writing in Connie’s notepad.  It’s a very interesting dynamic to say the least.  Connie seems to blame herself for Kelly’s disappearance but Daryl is supportive and ensures her that she shouldn’t go that route.  He even shares an old memory of his brother Merle (man, that’s a name we don’t hear often right?) that makes Connie laugh...and even go as far as take Daryl’s hand (*gasp*).

Ultimately, they end up finding a wounded Kelly and a hovering (didn’t she kind of look like a walker in that moment??) Magna along with the stolen goods.  Daryl is livid at this revelation but Connie tells him that they’ll bring it all back to the camp and tell them that they “found” the goods while they were out looking for Kelly.  She’s apologetic later to Daryl for the behavior of Kelly and Magna but Daryl understands and says, hey, they’re family: I get it.  But I mean, you know, in his own Daryl way.

KING EZEKIEL
Poor King Ezekiel.  He’s already been having a tough go of it what with the loss of...well everything that he’s had right?  We saw in last week’s episode that he’s been borderline suicidal as of late and we attributed it to all the loss, already discussed.  What we DIDN’T realize is that in reality, there’s another reason altogether for King Ezekiel’s behavior: Turns out that he has a significant growth on his throat/neck that seems to be an indicator that he is going through thyroid cancer (a disease apparently hereditary in his family).  Before the apocalypse, the survival rate from this type of cancer was quite high actually but sadly during these new times, Ezekiel essentially knows it’s a death sentence.  Siddiq is the one who uncovers all this and he tries to console him and gave him some sage advice which boils down to not going through this alone and sharing this information with his loved ones.

He comes close to doing this on the ham radio when he’s almost connected with Carol to speak with her but before that can happen, he opts to end the connection.  In truth, how do you have that conversation with anyone and let them know if your fatal diagnosis (apocalypse or not)?  And more importantly how in the world is JERRY going to take all of this??

NEGAN & BRANDON....& THE WHISPERERS
And finally our main attraction: Negan & Brandon.  Who is Brandon?  Apparently a sociopathic teenager that was Negan's keeper and has been OBSESSED with him, since his father's former Savior days.  Important to note however is that Brandon was NOT the one who freed Negan, since Brandon at one point in their journey asks him if he'll ever tell him how he got out of the cell (Negan ignores him of course).  No, Brandon is just an obsessed sociopath that follows Negan's footsteps and even went as far as to bring to him his leather jacket and a makeshift Lucille, as an offering, if you will.  Negan refuses to handle either, saying that it'll make him an easy target for anyone trying to find him.

Instead, Negan and Brandon come across an adorable little boy named Miles and his mother trapped in what appears to be a Greyhound bus.  Negan goes into high gear and goes in and saves both mother and son from peril, even having some light hearted, one-on-one uncle type chat with young Miles.  This moment made me incredibly wistful for what COULD HAVE BEEN with Carl, but at the same time, we are least getting glimpses of these moments with Negan and Miles and obviously between Negan and Judith.  Negan however, wants NOTHING to do with Brandon since he can very easily tell that he is a complete psycho.  After he basically tells him to get lost and has a great heart to heart with Miles, he goes off to scavenge for wood, knowing that it'll be dark soon and he'll need to start getting a fire going quick.

Sadly, when he returns, he comes to find Brandon back, whistling the old familiar Savior tune, and standing over the bodies of both little Miles and his mother, having killed them both to "prove" himself.  P-S-Y-C-H-O.  Before Brandon can finish uttering the famous line "I am Negan" Negan beats his face in with a rock and brutally kills him, letting out all his grief for what this deranged teen did to this innocent family.  He then picks up his leather jacket, puts it on, takes his Lucille 2.0 and walks off into the unknown.

After dark, Negan roams the woods, in the hunt for...perhaps the Whisperers?  Knowing that they're out there...baiting them?  He confidently strolls and talks loudly trying to draw them in, even stating the phase "Little Pig, Little Pig..." just as he did when banged on the gates of Alexandria asking them to let him in.  This finally does draw some walkers in a great scene in the dark, but under the gaze of moonlight.  He immediately begins taking down walkers with his new Lucille, just as old Negan used to do until...he is violently thrown to the ground and he turns and notices that he isn't surrounded by walkers anymore.  He's surrounded by Whisperers.  Including a hulking, angry Beta.  GAME ON.

For me the biggest curiosity, will be how the show handles the interaction between Alpha and Negan, because it'll be a HUGE indicator of what direction the show will now go in.  Will the show stay true to the comic material?  Or will it diverge from it and let Carol (potentially) be the one to enact her revenge on Alpha?

What happens next on the show will surely set the stage for some heavy material to come...

In all the years we've watched TWD, we've only come so close to the kind of spooky episode we received this week. Powerful performances delivered by Lauren Ridloff (AKA Connie) & Kevin T Carroll (AKA Virgil). And I think we're reaching an interesting turning point when it comes to Leah Shaw, Daryl Dixon, and The Reapers.
I cannot encourage you to download the unedited episode recording, enough. Since Aliza and I were the only hosts, I had such a lovely, long chat with her during the pre-show - almost worthy of it's own #TWDFamily Branches episode! We barely edited anything out of the episode and a lovely little post show, the whole of it is pretty short! Download it now and support the podcast! Click here:

  • Did you miss Kirk Manley's Exhibition? We announced the Winner of our Kirk Manley's #TWD Tribute Art Weekend Giveaway last night:

  • Amazing performances with Lauren Ridloff & Kevin T. Carroll. If not for this being the final season, they should've excluded the Daryl Dixon & The Reapers scenes.
  • The knife parallel: Leah Shaw's/Pope's knife is given to Daryl; Virgil attempts to give his knife to Connie.
  • Leah & Daryl expressing their thoughts openly to Carver. Daryl chirped more in this episode than whole seasons.
  • Would Daryl kill Leah if he had to? Would Leah kill Daryl? With whom would either side if their family were threatened.
  • In actual terms, even though we really didn't see it, Daryl and Leah had a relationship. Carver may have "picked up the pieces" after Daryl ran off on Leah.
  • Not wanting to see Daryl with Leah is completely understandable. Daryl went from asexual to multiple love interests: Parallel with Lori Grimes (her love for Rick Grimes even when she moved on with Shane Walsh). And could Leah have run off because she was pregnant?
  • Did Frost rat out Daryl to Pope? How far has Pope unraveled? Comparing Pope's behavior with Carver to Theodore Maddox from Fear The Walking Dead and the treatment of his disciple Riley.
  • So yeah, Frost may not be a double-agent... Most likely. No old world loyalty among military brothers.
  • The only way to hook Carver is to give him some truth, "I'm only here for her." Leah's uncanny ability to know when Daryl is lying to her. Discussing this in the shadow of the Daryl & Carol Spin-Off.
  • The Walking Dead did Enders better than Z-Nation did: Illustrates the acceleration of society's breakdown. Negan mentioning how he would've done things differently is different than his Comic book counterpart.
  • When the Ferals spoiler image going around wasn't so much of a spoiler. Greg Nicotero's visual talent truly shining through. The clever bait-and-switch of us, like Virgil, thinking Connie was seeing things.
  • Connie insisting that family is also found, in spite of Virgil's desire to sacrifice himself so she can find Kelly. Drawing some parallels with Virgil and Michonne (keeping their family close, at first).
  • Will Virgil die? Will either Michonne or Rick show up on any of these #TWDUniverse programs? What about the Grimes children (Judith Grimes & RJ Grimes)?
  • FearTWD's nuke could explain the desolation throughout the kids' journey in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Also, timelines...!
  • Where do you think our survivors will end up? The Commonwealth?
  • Is a happy ending possible in The Walking Dead Universe? Also, The Civic Republic Military isn't very nice...
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan/Negan going down swinging (what spin-off?) and both The Commonwealth & The CRM outlasting the main series. Possibly crossover to FearTWD?
  • Looking back, Terminus cannibals started crazy early: Ferals are what happens when you take Termites to their logical conclusion (eating the dead/Kuru/Wasting Disease).
  • The Ferals might've been teenagers when the fall occurred and how the house eventually became a spider's web, rather than a home.
  • Experiencing a little backstory dialogue between Virgil & Connie when Kelly finds Connie's pad. Attempting to determine (Virgil's and) Connie's whereabouts for the past month.
  • Ominous conversation about King Ezekiel's health/future. Unweaving our characters' (Stephanie Vega, Eugene Porter, Fake Stephanie, and Tomi Okumura) web of lies (and whether they'll have consequences).
  • Yumiko Okumura is impressed that there is someone with the title "governor" in Pamela Milton. Meanwhile, we can't help thinking about Woodbury.

[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 11 of The Walking Dead, "Bounty"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

Episode 11 of season 9 of The Walking Dead entitled "Bounty" deals with the bounty that two groups are concurrently trying to obtain: King Ezekiel & his merry men trying to obtain elk and a projector bulb for their upcoming fair and Alpha & the Whisperers trying to reclaim Lydia (Alpha's daughter) in a tense hostage negotiation with Daryl and the Hilltop.  All in all, there were some tense moments that were in sharp contrast to some of the silly whimsical moments that seem to surround anything King Ezekiel does but even with their group, there were definitely some close calls.

We start the episode with a slightly surprising flashback that we can identify it's point in the past by Carol's shoulder length hair and the appearance of Jesus and Tara meeting members of the Kingdom at a specific meeting point to do an exchange of medicine needed.  Jesus also brings to Ezekiel the Charter that Michonne had drafted to be signed by representatives from each of the communities (including the now defunct Sanctuary and Oceanside communities).  In present day, we see Ezekiel still reviewing this Charter, deep in his thoughts but determined to venture out with his team on their mission.

And what is the mission?  The mission WAS supposed to be just elk for the feast at the fair but Carol comes to find out that beyond elk, King Ezekiel has another target in mind: A projector bulb.  Apparently, the current projector bulb at the Kingdom has burnt out and Ezekiel has his heart set on sharing movies with everyone, especially the younger children, who many don't even know what a movie is.  What a thought right?  But bearing in mind that here ARE children born during the apocalypse (Judith and Gracie, for example) that have never seen a TV show, a movie, etc., that WOULD be a significant moment for them.  For that reason, Carol allows it and they enter a movie theater of horrors where they make their way to the projector room to get the desired bulb.  After some mishap with the movie walkers (and dropping the bulb among the general audience seating), the group manages to come out of the theater unscathed and with the elk, the projector bulb and a poster box for the Charter to be preserved.  So all is good...except for an ominous symbol on a random street sign.  WTF?

In the meantime, at the Hilltop, we come back to exactly where we left off in the last episode: With Alpha and the Whisperers at the gate.  Alpha is very clear about how they will NOT be looking for retribution for intruding on their land, for killing some of their men, etc.  BUT, if Lydia is not returned to them, there WILL be conflict (in Alpha's words).  In an attempt to call her bluff, Daryl states that they can't have her to which Alpha retorts "WRONG ANSWER".  At her signal, additional Whisperers come out, including two that are holding another two at knife point.  Daryl comes down from his post to meet Alpha face to face at the gate himself, trying to further flaunt how they are not threatened by their presence.  There is the faint sound of a baby crying and as he looks up he is unnerved to see a masked Whisperer woman with a baby in a sling.  He is shocked that they would bring a baby out into this potential volatile situation.  Alpha, completely calm, indicates that they are no different than a pack of animals and animals do have babies after all.  She continues on that what she is proposing is a trade: Two of the Hilltop's men for one of hers.  It's at that point that Daryl sees that Luke and Alden have been unmasked and revealed as Alpha's hostage bargaining chips.  All the while, Connie is still hiding in the corn fields and we see that Luke sees her and is signaling sign language behind his back to keep her informed on what's going on.  She remains hidden in the fields, watching.

Now that the stakes have been raised, Daryl immediately goes back in to grab Lydia and conduct the trade...only Lydia is nowhere to be found.  Henry realized that Lydia was likely going to be given back to her mother by Daryl and took it upon himself to whisk her away to the teenage post apocalyptic hang out spot.  Enid and Addy (one of the teenage girls) immediately realize this and go off to find them.

In the meantime, some of the Whisperers are keeping incoming walkers at bay but the baby has not stopped crying.  We see the Whisperer "mom" trying desperately to calm the baby down and lull it to a sense of security and calmness, to no avail.  She finally looks up at Alpha, with an urgency and fear in her eyes, to which Alpha simply shrugs.  The Whisperer "mom" knows what this means and she sadly but calmly removes the sling with the baby in it and softly places it on the floor...and begins to walk away.  Shockingly and sadly leaving it behind for the walkers.  Alpha stares at the woman and comments that it's all natural selection and if the mother cannot quiet the child, the dead will.  Luke and Alden immediately indicate to the Hilltop that there's a baby in the field, prompting the group to start banging on the walls to try and distract the walkers from the baby.  To say that everyone's heart rate went through the roof here would be an understatement.

Fortunately, Luke signs to Connie that there's a baby in the field.  Connie very stealthy runs out of hiding, takes down a couple of walkers with her slingshot and grabs the baby in the sling.  She runs back into the cornfield and in a truly mesmerizing piece of direction, we see Connie with the baby moving in slow motion through the cornfields and the only sound we hear is the muffled far away sounds of the walkers and baby crying, which we are to understand that this is all that Connie can hear.  Somehow, she is able to keep the walkers that appear from the field at bay but thankfully, she is rescued just in time by Daryl, Tammy and other Hilltop residents who lead her and the baby to safety.

At the same time, Enid and Addy do indeed track down Henry and Lydia.  As much as Enid tries to convince Henry on how they have no choice but to return Lydia to her mother, Henry is fully resistant to the idea of this.  Lydia, however, doesn't give him a choice and comes out of the house, willingly volunteering to go back, for the good of all and because Alpha is, after all, her mother and if she came back for her, doesn't that mean she really does care?  Eh, not so sure about that logic but okay.

Upon her return, Daryl escorts Lydia out to do the formal prisoner exchange with Alpha, who, true to her word, returns Luke and Alden unharmed.  Lydia approaches Alpha and thanks her mom for coming to get her.  At this, Alpha immediately slaps Lydia across the face as hard as possible.  She then holds her and tells her to call her Alpha, just like everyone else.  Lydia immediately apologizes and obliges, as they and the rest of the Whisperers retreat and walk away.

Later on we see that Henry cannot get Lydia out of his mind (teenager) and decides to go off and find her...and save her?  Okay.  Daryl gets wind of this via a note left that was found by Addy and is off to go and save his stupid teenage self.  Connie, however, stops him and insists on joining him.  So off they go, Daryl, Connie and dog to track down Henry and bring him back to safety before he gets himself killed...and/or anyone else.

At 1900 hours, or Seven in the PM, we're going 11x11 on your asses. This episode introduced a satisfying amount of frustration (we know how that sounds): between the deception wrought upon #EugenePorter (on behalf of #StephanieVega / Shira / #MaxineHawkins), the larger deception of #TheCommonwealth on #Mercer (and Connie/Kelly), and #LanceHornsby showing his cards to #CarolPeletier.
We definitely cut out a lot of hijinks and extended conversations (not to mention rampant technical difficulties - which are hilarious in their own way) in the pre-show, post-show, and even throughout the episode! This is definitely an unedited episode recording you do not want to miss out on! You can stream it, now, and all Early Access Unedited Episode Recordings by supporting us, here:

INITIAL THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS

  • Was this episode boring?
  • Aliza: Eugene Porter's Shakespearean monologue, Connie in peril? And the Oscar goest to: Josh McDermitt
  • Jasmine: A rewatch can do this episode wonders.
  • Why did Shira let things go too far?
  • Rachael: Questions finally answered?
  • Is there an actual Stephanie Vega?
  • #CarolBeCaroling
  • Bridget: Was this episode inspired by Alfred Hitchcock?
  • We see each character in The Commonwealth through the various perspectives of our characters.
  • Sherrandy: The writers have been experimenting with different styles; this episode feels like a spy thriller, while 11x06 "On the Inside" felt more like a horror movie.

BLUE WEEVIL TO TATER BUG

  • Why does Max (Maxine Hawkins?) come to Eugene, at the end?
  • How does Shira know what Eugene said on the radio?
  • How did Eugene not catch Shira in her lies?
  • Was Max caught while talking to Eugene?
  • Was Max in on Lance Hornsby's plan?
  • Similar to Fear the Walking Dead Season 2, with Jack tricking Alicia Clark into letting him board The Abigail.
  • How long has Max been Pamela Milton's assistant?
  • Are Lance, Max, Shira, and the rest of The Plumbers Union working to take down the class divide within The Commonwealth?

  • Connie is in The Truman Show.
  • What kind of document did Eugene actually sign and was it similar to the document Editor Jan
    mentioned Tyler Davis signed?

LANCE HORNSBY FOR GOVERNOR

  • Lance doesn't want the Alexandrians to see the Commonwealth and their communities as separate, but refers to them as different during his confrontation with Eugene.
  • Has Lance been moving people up to gain their loyalty?
  • Is Lance moving people up or promising to?
  • What does Moto's community need money for if they aren't a part of the Commonwealth?

  • Is Lance trying to wrestle control of The Commonwealth from Pamela?
  • Could Lance be a better leader, since he worked his way to the top?
  • Does The Commonwealth even hold (free & fair) elections? Sounds a lot like Tweedism (named after Boss Tweed, who's philosophy was "I don't care who does the electing, as long as I get to do the nominating.").
  • The Hilltop formula: Maggie Rhee to Gregory, Paul "Jesus" Rovia to Maggie, Tara Chambler to Jesus. Comparing these two second-in-commands: Simon to Lance.

The Rotten Core isn't just about the rot inside #TheCommonwealth (namely, and for the sake of brevity, #LanceHornsby), but the surprisingly emotional exploration of what it must've been like for #MaggieRhee & #Negan to live inside their grief for so long: how it manifests, (re)visiting specific scenes from this perspective.
You have access to a whole HOUR of unedited footage, filled to the brim with hilarious outtakes and and behind the scenes gossip: available only to supporters of the BEST #TWDUniverse #podcast! Head here to grab that AND join the family:

INITIAL THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS

  • The Rotten Core is also the name of The Walking Dead comic book's 31st volume.
  • Story-wise, the comic volume would start around the time of TWD 11x12 The Lucky Ones.
  • Rachael: Loving savage Aaron, but still isn't on board with his parenting!
  • Did Aaron have to kill Toby Carlson?
  • What is The Commonwealth armor made out of (that don't produce bullet holes when Carlson was hit, center mass)?
  • Bridget: Felt that this episode didn't hold up to the previous episode, Warlords: it was a little too slow for her.
  • Jasmine: Liked the scenes with Hershel Rhee & Negan, but not a fan of Negan's nuptials with Annie, citing a callback to another (possibly?) ill-fated romance between Daryl Dixon & Leah Shaw (TWD 11x18 Find Me).
  • Was the Negan & Annie dynamic too much for fans to accept/handle in one episode?
  • Does the Isle of the Dead spin-off series (with Negan & Maggie Rhee) signal Annie's death sentence?
  • If the foretold clash between Lance Hornsby & Maggie occurs next episode, what does TWD 11x16 look like?
  • Is a revolution within the walls of The Commonwealth around the corner?
  • Are the writers trying to lure the fans into a false sense of security based on what the know from the graphic novels?

THE LAYERING OF LANCE HORSNBY

  • The Lance we experience on the TV series is a far different (and more interesting) character from his comic book counterpart!
  • Sherrandy's take: Lance seems less like Saul Goodman (Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul) and more like Petyr Baelish (Game of Thrones)
  • Lance lets slip to Carol Peletier things only work if people play their part (rather than do their part).
  • Is there a connection between he and Primrose (the post-credits scene during the season finale to The Walking Dead: World Beyond)?
  • Bridget mentions The Walking Dead's companion graphic novel The Alien which portrays the brother of Rick Grimes, Jeffrey Grimes, surviving the zombie apocalypse in Spain.
  • Dave recommends watching The Night Eats World, a zombie film that takes place in France (in English) on Amazon Prime.
  • Do we even have enough information to produce theories on Primrose?

THE LIST

  • Who are the names on the list slipped under Connie & Kelly's door in TWD 11x11 Rogue Element?
  • Who gave them the list?
  • April Martens is one of those names and might be the April we meet in this episode.
  • What was the intention of giving Connie this list and what role will having it ultimately play?
  • Could Lance have given them the list to stir the pot?
  • Do the events of this episode end up ruling out Mercer as a possibility?
  • What about Shira or Roman Calhoun?
  • Could Lance could be attempting to indict Pamela Milton by way of shining a light on Sebastian Milton’s crimes?
  • Could Lance and Pamela be related (cousins)?
  • Could Lance have sent out Carlson to get rid of a future threat?
  • Might Lance have been attempting to rope-in Carol much in the way he did Carlson?
  • In our coverage of Fear The Walking Dead 6x04 The Key, we discovered that the color green represents poison or rot: Lance has a bright green apple paperweight on the desk in his office.
  • According to Semiotics & stuff (blog), the green apple represents the mind, red apples represent the heart.
  • Is Lance (what he previously describes to Carol in Rogue Element as) a true believer? Does Lance feel he is doing the right thing?
  • How similar is Lance to The Governor (Phillip Blake)?

  • Aliza’s comparison of Lance and Simon (of The Saviors) is starting to seem more accurate.
  • Why does Lance need Carol, really?
  • Could Carol have become a villain had she joined the wrong people?
  • Was Lance genuinely upset that Sebastian put Daryl and Rosita Espinosa in harm's way?
  • Do both Lance & Sebastian consider people like Daryl, Rosita, and Toby Carlson as expendable losses?
  • What if Lance is just setting up our survivors as scapegoats or a common enemy of the people of The Commonwealth?
  • It seems like Mercer been on the edge for a while: Is this a turning point for him?

MERCER TAKES A STAND

  • How satisfying was it to see Mercer take out his own men?
  • Does Lance have a higher ranking position than Mercer?
  • Isn't General Mercer just under Pamela?
  • Tyler Davis is on the list given to Connie and Sebastian was the one to apprehend him.
  • Does rank and file even matter of Sebastian can do as he pleases?
  • With Castle & Alves taken out by Mercer, will Daryl & Rosita take over as Sebastian's goon-squad?
  • Could Mercer's extrajudicial execution of Castle & Alves have consequences?

GOODBYE TOBY

  • What does Toby Carlson realize at this moment?
  • Could it be that Toby realized Lance might've been sending him to slaughter?
  • Just like the Stanley Milgram experiment, how often do we all cater to authority?
  • Is it possible that Mercer, himself, might've done horrific things, similar to Toby Carlson, under orders?
  • Considering our lack of notes, was as straight-forward an episode as it seemed?

THE BAD MAN

  • Will Hershel tell Maggie what happened between he and Negan?
  • Rachael wants to know why Maggie didn't immediately hug Hershel. Dave explains why Maggie might've made the right call.
  • Will Hershel, Annie, and Annie's (unborn) child be a part of the Maggie/Negan spin-off series Isle of the Dead?
  • Could all the TWDU spin-offs be an homage to Robert Kirkman scheduling comic book release dates and creating cover art for fictitious issues (then stopping at issue 193)? In other words, are they are a red-herring/non-existent?
  • Does Negan feel intense remorse over killing Glenn Rhee?
  • Had he known Glenn was about to become a father, would Negan have killed someone else during the line-up (TWD 6x16/7x01)?
  • Can Negan be truly redeemed? Does he even want to be?
  • Maggie's feelings toward Negan remind us of Alicia Clark's & Charlie's interactions in FearTWD 4x10 Close Your Eyes.

GUT UP OR SHUT UP

  • Do Daryl & Rosita see themselves in April?
  • Why did they even take this job?
  • The way Mercer, April, Daryl, and Rosita exit the panic room feels like a callback to Jessie Anderson's and Sam Anderson’s deaths in TWD 6x09 No Way Out.
  • What happens to orphans in the Commonwealth? Is there an adoption agency?
  • Are there incentives for taking in orphans?
  • Behavioral statistics with Dave on procreation rates among the upper and lower class (and why only the upper class can afford to adopt)

#TEAMLEAH

  • On whose side will Leah Shaw end up?
  • What are Leah’s aims?
  • What is the likelihood that she returned to her cabin and found Daryl's note/map to find him?
  • Will we ever find out why did Pope "marked" Maggie?
  • Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
  • Is Leah channeling her inner clear Morgan Jones?
  • Is Leah operating alone or has she teamed-up with others?
  • Jasmine dares to ask: What if Leah killed Connie or Carol?
  • Where are Virgil, Cyndie, and Luke?
  • Caryl and Donnie and Darleah! Oh my!
