[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 8 of The Walking Dead, "Evolution"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

We've arrived at the midseason finale for Season 9 of The Walking Dead, entitled "Evolution", a reference to Rosita and Eugene's delirious statements that the walkers are evolving into communicating beings.  So how justifiable is this claim?  Well, it's a little complicated.

At the beginning of the episode before the credits even roll, we see Daryl, Aaron and Jesus already out in the woods, hiding behind some trees and observing something that's become fairly routine: A hoard of walkers.  The only difference is that they're just...mulling around in circles, as a contained entity almost like a concentrated storm system.  They comment that this behavior is indeed very unusual and they don't know what to make of it at all.  That said, before it gets dark, they decide to keep moving in order to find Eugene, sooner rather than later.  It's at this moment that we get a close up into the walker herd and we see the back of one PARTICULAR walker come to a full STOP, stand up ERECT and TURN their head to the side, likely toward to the sound of our heroes.

It's at this moment that it is abundantly clear that these are not walkers (spoiler alert) OR if they ARE something very nefarious is at foot.

But first, we need to revisit The Hilltop where Michonne has arrived with her band of newcomers.  To say that there's apparent tension is a gross understatement.  It is glaringly obvious that something occurred between these two communities to cause a rift of this level and a great deal of animosity toward Michonne specifically.  What decision did she make during this six year time jump that's made her public enemy number one?  At least Carol tries to extend an olive branch to Michonne and invite her to King Ezekiel's proposed fair (RED FLAG/SPOILER ALERT: DON'T GO TO THE FAIR).  But Michonne politely, yet firmly, declines the invite.  Smart on her, to be honest.

Michonne spends most of her time at Rosita's bedside as she recovers, alongside with Siddiq.  They speak some of the past, but in vague enough terms that we as viewers are still not clear on what occurred to get the relations to this level.  Before the conversation can go any further, Rosita wakes up with a start and asks feverishly about Eugene.  She is told he is still out there and she jumps out of bed and insists that they need to get to him IMMEDIATELY.

And while everyone is occupied at the Hilltop, someone apparently has been negligent with Negan's care because he one day casually gives his cell wall a slight push...only to realize that it was left unlocked.  A shocked Negan very calmly fully opens the door, grins his typical grin and walks right on out.

When we rejoin our heroes in the woods, we learn between conversations between Jesus and Aaron that Jesus is not very enthusiastic at the prospects of being the new leader of the Hilltop.  He's always lived a life on his own terms, coming in and out of society (sort of like Daryl in a way), so the idea of the committed responsibilities of a formal leader are not appealing.  Aaron tries to convince him he's more than capable but Daryl is more concerned about finding Eugene before the hoard catches up with them or it gets dark (or both).  In a smart move, he tosses an alarm clock into a field to distract the walkers...except, it doesn't work, unbeknownst to Daryl and crew.

Eventually, they come across the little shed Rosita mentioned and they find Eugene, hidden underneath the floor boards, in a sort of secret crawl space.  He is absolutely TERRIFIED and insists that the walkers have somehow evolved and they can now speak to eachother.  The crew is doubtful but they do see that the herd has caught up with them and they need to get Eugene to safety as soon as possible.  A hobbling Eugene is led away by Aaron and Jesus while Daryl (and dog) decide to go a different way in an attempt to distract the hoard.  Daryl even goes as far as throwing some firecrackers in an attempt to create an obvious diversion.  But he is absolutely stunned and confused to see the herd completely ignore the noise and stay the course of following Jesus and the others.  It's clear at this point that something is very wrong.

In a sort of homage to classic horror films, specifically George Romero zombie flicks, Jesus, Aaron and Eugene find themselves in a foggy cemetery after dark.  They see that beyond the gate, they should be able to get Eugene to safety but they can't quite open the door fast enough.  Jesus and Aaron realize that there's no way around it: They're going to have to fight off the walkers, at least to a point to allow a break to open up that gate.  Luckily for them the calvary arrives in the form of Daryl, Michonne, Magna and Yumiko.  They work on opening the gate and continue putting down the herd, especially Jesus.  You get the impression that after being kept in a sort of "desk job" if you will, he is relishing in this opportunity to be able to fight in the wild again.  He makes quick work of many of them, with a flourish, but unfortunately he doesn't realize how one of the walkers isn't really a walker.  This presumed walker sidesteps his advance comes up behind him and stabs him through the heart, ominously telling him that he is where he does not belong.

Aaron screams in anguish and the group immediately starts putting down everything around them (walker or not).  Once all died down, Daryl notices something strange looking about one of the walkers...stitches specifically on the head of one of the fallen walkers.  He takes out his knife to pull apart the stitches and makes a shocking discovery:  The face was a walker MASK.  After Daryl pulls off the mask, we see that underneath was a human person.

At this point we hear an echo of whispers in the dark fog and our heroes line up in a circle Avengers-style to protect themselves from this new threat.  But what is it exactly?

[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 7 of The Walking Dead, "Stradivarius"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

The episode in advance of the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead entitled "Stradivarius" hums along smoothly enough but definitely gives off that dreaded "filler episode" vibe.  This is mostly due to the limelight being cast (mostly) on our new arrivals rather than our core group of characters.  We did get a few notable moments (Daryl's camp scenes primarily), but by and large, this was an episode meant to set us up for the midseason finale.

The very beginning of the episode shows a very disorientated Rosita running through the woods trying to escape...what, exactly?  Inevitably midway through the episode, Jesus and Aaron end up finding Rosita (after she sends out a flare) during a fight training session beyond the walls.  A glimpse at life at The Hilltop shows a thriving society filled with sustainable resources, medics (in the form of Enid) and the basic day to day tasks that come from governing a society.  Jesus, however, seems thoroughly bored and caged in his new defacto role as leader of the Hilltop, seemingly much more comfortable out on the road or in the woods.  Nevertheless, Rosita informs Jesus and Aaron that Eugene is still out there but they need to get her to safety first and then come back for Eugene.

As already mentioned, the episode primarily follows Michonne, Siddiq and our new group of visitors as they make their way to The Hilltop.  Michonne is still highly skeptical of the group and even Luke's attempt to convince her that their observation of art and music is what will allow them to survive and advance beyond the walkers fall on deaf ears.  So weary and suspicious is Michonne that, during an overnight stay at the newcomer's previous supply fort, upon coming across Luke awake in the middle of the night holding something, she assumes that he is holding a weapon and cuts it in half...only then realizing that it was Luke's prized violin, a Stradivarius.  The next day, we find out Michonne is even more apprehensive of traveling to the Hilltop because of the presumed presence of Maggie.

Again, why this beef between the two women?  We'll definitely need this backstory before the season is up.

Siddiq ends up being the person that fills her in on the fact that Maggie is no longer at the Hilltop and that she took her baby Herschel and left some time ago.  Before a shocked Michonne can inquire further and get more information, they are forced to make waste of a group of walkers uncovered at this base.  It's all hands on deck and as a result, Michonne allows the newcomer's to have access to their confiscated weapons again and everyone is quickly acting to defeat the threat in front of them.  After a certain point, it looks like the threat has been neutralized...until a familiar figure in a paisley shirt stumbles out.  It is the infamous Bernie, that the newcomers have spoken so fondly of.  The sight of him makes the usually tough Magna to break down and in order to alleviate her of anymore pain, Michonne mercifully puts him out of his misery.  The whole experience causes them to bond and develop a sense of trust that allows them to arrive at The Hilltop in a much better place than where they started...although startled to hear that Rosita is already at the Hilltop receiving necessary medical care.

The other part of the episode surrounds Carol and Henry and their eventual encounter of Daryl's apparent camp.  We come to find out that Daryl ventured out here, in an attempt to find Rick or Rick's body and when he found nothing, he decided to just set up camp out there.  Clearly there is WAY more to Daryl's past than this, as evidenced from the "X" scars on his back, strikingly similar to the one on Michonne's back.  Again, I'm sure we'll get some more backstory on this eventually.  In any case, Carol is looking to convince Daryl to rejoin society and come with them to the Hilltop in order to provide Henry with some guidance (or as Daryl says, to be Henry's babysitter).  He resists vehemently at first but after some bonding via Henry saving him (and of course, Dog), he decides to join them on their journey to the Hilltop.

Upon their arrival, they are also notified about Rosita's medical treatment after being found in the woods...but Eugene is still out there, potentially hurt.  Aaron and Daryl decide to go out and look for him but Jesus insists on coming along also.  This is not what Tara wants, since she would prefer that Jesus, as leader of the Hilltop, stays behind, safe and sound but Jesus is insistent that he knows the terrain best and he needs to be out there with them.

The final shot that we see is a majestic overhead shot of Daryl, Aaron and Jesus (and Dog) on their way into the great unknown...on their way to encounter who knows what.

[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 9 of The Walking Dead, "Adaptation"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

So after the shocking death of our beloved Jesus, we are back with the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead entitled “Adaptation”.  We pick up exactly where we left off which is in the cemetery, with our heroes trying to assess the danger around them.  This includes the scene where we see our crew surrounded by walkers and…others.  All of a sudden of these supposed walkers jumps out and tries to strike Michonne with a knife but Yumiko is fast enough to take them down with an arrow before that could happen.  The crew decides to get out of this area as soon as possible and so they quickly gather Jesus’ body and make their way out of the cemetery, shutting the gate as they leave…not realizing that a supposed walker has reached with their hand out and has unlocked the gate.  Cue the credits.

When we come back, we also pick up where we left off with Negan.  He has escaped from his jail cell after realizing that it had been left unlocked.  He has a shovel and heads over to Michonne’s home, clearly with the intention of killing her and…taking over?  We’ll never know however since he unintentionally enters Judith’s room instead and sees a child’s hand drawn picture posted on the wall entitled “My Family” and it shows likenesses of Michonne, Rick, Judith and even little RJ.  Negan sees this image and completely has a change of heart and instead, swipes Judith’s compass, changes into some civilian clothes (Rick’s old clothes?) and decides to just leave Alexandria.  In his attempt to scale the wall, he is stopped by little Judith who has a gun on him and threatens him about escaping.  Using the old Negan charm as well as the seemingly established relationship between the two, he’s able to convince her that there is nothing left for him here and rather than waste away in a cell, he’d rather take his chances out there (even though Judith warns him about there not being anything left out there for him).  Before leaving, Judith tells him that he can keep her compass and he assures her that he’ll never kill anyone again.  And with that, he’s off…but not before Judith tells him next time she sees him, she won’t hesitate to shoot.

Meanwhile our crew is on their way back to The Hilltop to return Jesus’ body for a proper burial as well as to bring Eugene in for medical treatment to his leg.  As a nod to the past, Michonne is thankful to Daryl for bringing back Jesus and for all the time and effort he put in to try and find Rick’s body (obviously to no avail).

As they continue on their journey, they come across a bridge that seems to have a handful of walkers stumbling toward them…or are they?  In light of what they just went through in the cemetery, Daryl very cleverly raises his crossbow and shoots at one walker through the leg.  No reaction of course.  He then shoots another “walker” through the leg and this time the walker screams in pain and falls to the ground proving that this was yet another human dressed in zombie skins.  His screams immediately attract the ACTUAL walkers and he is devoured while in the meantime, another “walker” pulls out a knife and attempts to attack Michonne.  This is all for naught of course, since Michonne kills him fairly quickly with her katana.  The last remaining “walker” surrounds on her knees immediately and when Daryl pulls off the face mask, we see that it is a young woman, clearly terrified.  Daryl and Michonne instantly start asking her questions as to how many more of her people are there, which she lies about (of course).  Daryl states that she should be taken in as their hostage for further questioning.  Michonne is not crazy about this but agrees to allow it.

At the Hilltop, a proper burial is had for Jesus and the interrogation of the captive young girl begins.  Unfortunately, all the threats and intimidation do nothing to pursue here therefore, they leave her to stew in her cell until they figure out the next steps.  Young Henry happens to be in the cell next to her and they start to develop a “friendship” which Daryl is VERY well aware, as he is seen eavesdropping outside the cell window.

And speaking of eavesdropping, Eugene eavesdrops on Siddiq and Rosita’s conversation and finds out she’s pregnant with his baby!  Talk about drama…

Meanwhile, Negan is off on his own journey, with nothing other than the clothes on his back on a knapsack full of food, liquids, and supplies.  It’s not entirely clear how much time goes by while he’s out there, but we get to a point where he has run out of food and water and is struggling to find resources.  He attempts to drink from a lake or stream, only to end up having an adverse reaction to it.

FUN FACT: Did you pick up that the clearing where Negan was throwing up on his knees was the same clearing where the original line up happened and he killed Abraham and Glenn?

After a quick visit to a department store where he gets another leather jacket (and narrowly escapes some feral dogs) he eventually he arrives at The Sanctuary, home sweet home…or so he thinks.  Upon arrival, he’s greeted to a gutted, waterlogged space, devoid of any humans.  He does the old Savior whistle to no avail.  It definitely begs the question as to what in the WORLD happened during the 6 year time jump that caused The Sanctuary’s ultimate demise and why is Negan not shocked at what he sees.  How much does he know about what occurred and how much was he INVOLVED in what occurred.  He was borderline suicidal before the time jump and afterward he was in much better spirits and groomed.  Does what happened here have anything to do with that?

In any case, he takes a lay of the land and even tries arranging some leftover furniture but it’s all pointless.  Everyone is gone with the exception of a few walker Saviors one of whom (Big Richie) he comments was loyal until the very end.  He tries to lock himself in and avoid having to kill or hurt anyone but he can’t escape it anymore and ultimately ends up killing the walkers outside, as well as loyal Big Richie walker.  He DOES however, manage to find a motorcycle that appears to have been hidden within the Sanctuary, as an emergency vehicle.  With his leather jacket and bike, he leaves the Sanctuary and is driving down the road…when he is promptly shot off his bike by Judith (truthfully, she shot at the wheel not at him it seems).  She tells him that there are people searching for him and she told him there was nothing for him out there.  He agrees and after a hilarious exchange (“Language!  I’m a kid asshole!”), he voluntarily agrees to come back to Alexandria with her.

Finally, we come to find out Luke and Alden went out to try and find Jesus and team (completely unaware that they have already returned to Hilltop with Jesus’ body in tow).  As they revisit where our team was, they follow a trail of arrows, since Luke insists that those are Yumiko’s arrows and she left them as a direction or “sign”.  They keep following the trail until they come across a terrifying moment of a walker standing in the middle of woods…you simply stands there, staring at them.  At that point, they realize they are surrounded by supposed walkers until finally one female masked walker pulls a gun on them and simply says, “Trail Ends Here”.

Yikes. So are Luke and Alden done for?  And who are these masked walker people?

[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 2 of The Walking Dead, "The Bridge"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

By Carolina Gallardo (@carolgallardo)

The second episode of Season 9 of The Walking Dead is all about bridges...literally, figuratively, in every which way.  Hence the title "The Bridge" which continues to ask the question: Can people truly come together?  Or will there always be conflict?  At least between Saviors & Non-Saviors?  Can a bridge between these once warring parties ever truly be created?

We start off the episode with a voice over from Rick discussing how they are evolving, building and growing.  We see the fruits of his labor in terms of various members of the community going about their day to day tasks and responsibilities, romantic relationships, all illustrating a sense of normalcy in this dangerous world.  We even see young Henry kiss Carol before running off to his own errands, as she and Ezekiel look on proudly (awww).  We come to realize eventually that this Rick voice over is because this is all being explained to Negan (yes, he's still very much alive, lest you forget) by Rick, as he visits his jail cell.  Rick greatly advocates on how it is in people's nature to come together while it is obvious that Negan greatly disagrees and believes that it is in people's nature to DISAGREE and to engage in conflict.  Rick's annoyance with Negan's disapproval almost gives off the impression that he WANTS to convince Negan of his way, that he CARES what he thinks.  These jail cell conversations will likely continue in the episodes to come (especially you're at all familiar with the comics *ahem*).

In any case, we see in the episode that Michonne ventures to visit Maggie at The Hilltop, as she is trying to tame and redeem a wild horse (metaphorical, no?), in an attempt to appeal to her kinder inner self and convince her to supply the Saviors with food.  Maggie is quick to point out that she has not received the requested ethanol fuel from their camp but Michonne says that the convoy that was to bring over the supplies has gone missing.

This point comes up again in a conversation between Alden and Rick regarding worker Saviors, therefore we can quickly infer that SOMETHING is going on that these Saviors are being picked off (particularly in light of how the episode ends).  But we'll revisit this topic at the end.

Maggie continues to stand her ground and Michonne begins to question her on what is going on with Earl, the blacksmith.  Turns out that Maggie has him locked up in one of her cells, but because this is a new experience for her, she is not at all sure how long would he be jailed for, what the terms are etc.  Maggie does not want to simply just let Earl go, considering he conspired to kill her, but it is clear Jesus has reservations on her decision.  This is particularly since Earl's wife Tammi implored Jesus to convince Maggie to let her see her husband.  She is incredibly compelling in her distraught in not only losing her son, but now losing her husband in a way, to being jailed.  This interaction certainly seemed to make an impression on Jesus who does try to bring it up to Maggie (in the most gentle way possible of course, considering she did hang a guy, let's not forget).  Maggie is doubtful but it's clear that she values Jesus' opinion and is giving it some thought.

Also, it is worth noting that apparently Georgie (the woman who gave Maggie the handbook "The Key to the Future") has been in regular contact with Maggie on the progress at the communities and has tried to convince Maggie to come and JOIN her.  But, join her...where?  Well, if you're a comic book fan, you likely have an idea where Georgie's from but only time will tell if that's accurate.

Eventually, we see that Maggie ends relents and allows Tammi to have a tender moment with Earl down in the jail cells (which ironically he helped build).  From their heartfelt conversation, Maggie and the audience learns that Earl had a drinking problem.  Maggie ends up having a one on one conversation with Earl regarding his past and ultimately, this allows her to come to the point to decide to set him free to live and work in the community as he once did...but under supervision (a sort of post apocalyptic probation, if you will).  She also decides to have food sent to the Saviors.  An incredibly grateful Michonne asks why the change of heart and Maggie says that it was primarily because her father (the late, great Hershel) also had a drinking problem but HE was redeemable and contributed to the good of so many.  She still stands by her decision to execute Gregory though because to Maggie, he had plenty of opportunities to change and he squandered them all.  Essentially, he was past any redemption.

The question then becomes, who has the RIGHT to make that call?  On who is redeemable and who isn't?  That's still left to be determined.

On another note, we see a romantic/lustful relationship blossom between Anne/Jadis and Father Gabriel.  Anne seems to have a closer friendship with him than with anyone else and even works on a portrait sketch, based on Gabriel's recollection.  Turns out that this was a sketch of his church organist who he happened to have strong feelings for.  Finally during his night watch, while sitting on a bench, Anne finally makes a sexual move on Gabriel (damn, pretty aggressive Anne), who FULLY reciprocates after he explains that he's Episcopalian, meaning no celibacy for him (damn Gabriel with the smooth words).

What is the MOST interesting however, is what happens AFTER their little stolen moment: As Anne now stands in now as apparently the Watch (holding one of her little wire creatures, I may add), she looks up...and notices the black helicopter flying overhead, causing her eyes to widen as large as saucers.

Clearly this helicopter is always hovering nearby in some sort of regular observation.  But who is manning it?  Georgie's group?  Someone else altogether?  I have a feeling that we'll finally get a firm answer to these questions this season.

But the focal aspect of this episode all revolves around the bridge, and the repairs needed to be completed in order to unify the areas and also be ready for when a potential roaming hoard eventually comes there way.  We see that both Saviors and Non-Saviors are working on the bridge but the tensions are very high between both sides.  Things come to a head when Justin (one of the Saviors) decides to push young Henry aside in order to gulp up more water than he should, since one cup is being rationed to each person.  Henry decides to take it upon himself to knock Justin down with his stick, something that he does not take lightly.  As he goes to attack Henry, Daryl stops him which becomes an all out brawl between the two men, only to be broken up by Rick.  In a tent scene very reminiscent of a scene out of M*A*S*H (actually, all of the tent episodes felt like scenes from M*A*S*H), Daryl very clearly expresses how he feels that The Saviors are all past redemption.

This ends up coming up again when The Saviors go AWOL during a log endeavor that ends up being ambushed by a hoard of walkers.  Justin, the Savior that was supposed to be on call and let the workers know that they were coming, wasn't able to for reasons that he said were beyond him.  The result of this is a horrific accident where a log falls on Aaron's arm and essentially crushes it, only be saved by Daryl who rushes him to the infirmary while the rest of the camp fights off the walkers and diffuses the situation.  Aaron's arm unfortunately is beyond repair though and Enid, the new defacto nurse, has to end up making the executive decision that in order to save Aaron's arm, his arm will need to be amputated...and in a gruesome and cringe worthy scene, that is exactly what happens.

A delirious with anger Daryl enters the tent to confront a non-remorseful Justin who's excuses fall on deaf ears.  Daryl attacks Justin with all the pent up anger in his being, only pulling back because he's forced to.  Eventually we see in the evening time, after dark, that when Justin once again mouths off at this time Rick, he pushes his luck to the point of no return and Rick banishes him back to The Sanctuary.  Justin doesn't bother to wait until morning and opts to head back right then and there...only he never makes it since he apparently sees someone he recognizes and we as the viewer then see that he appears to be knocked out by this said person.

So who this person that is apparently picking off Saviors left and right?  And who's way is right and who's way is wrong?  How can a "more perfect union" be achieved after a war?  And how do we govern moving forward?  It seems that this will continue to be a focus at least in the front half of the season.  The war's over...now what?  That was the easy part but what comes next?  Well, that's decidedly more complicated.

[RECAP] Season 8, Episode 6 of The Walking Dead, "The King, the Widow, and Rick"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

While Episode 6: The King, The Widow & Rick started setting in motion events that will surely have significant ramifications by the mid-season finale, overall, it was one of the weaker episodes of the season by far.  In fact, this episode should've just been titled "Bad Decisions" since that's all we saw our beloved characters do throughout the entire episode.

In the case of Rick, we see confirmation that our fearless leader was in fact on his way to see the Garbage People (at least that's what I'm calling them).  Also, apparently Jadis and her second-in-command work on metal/wire art in the nude, when not fighting? In any case, they put some clothes on to (properly) welcome Rick and see what in the world he wants.  He reiterates that he STILL wants to make a deal with them and shares with Jadis all the polariods taken during the war to show her that they're essentially the better pony to bet on.  Jadis is (as she should be) incredulous that Rick STILL wants to make a deal with her people, especially since she keeps bringing up that she shot him (not a detail to be overlooked).  Finally he gives her an ultimatum: Join their cause or be defeated by his people.  Jadis' response is a soft, "No".  And with that, he is dragged away, while she mutters about how he talks too much (this coming from a group that doesn't use prepositions in their speech but that's okay).

Then we have the Daryl/Tara and Rosita/Michonne story line.  Not too much to say here other than Rosita gets an awesome RPG kill on a Savior that tries to call her "honey" (in the wake of recent sexual harassment allegations, I have to imagine that many a woman out there was living vicariously through Rosita).  But beyond that, we have (4) martial members of Team Grimes going out on essentially a suicide mission.  Daryl and Tara are appreciative of Dwight's help to get this far....but they still don't trust him and decide he must be killed.  Really?  Dwight?  Isn't the whole point of the plan to get Negan?  Eye on the prize people.

Joining them on their suicide mission is the team of Rosita and Michonne, both still recovering from the Savior attack on Alexandria in the season finale of last season.  For whatever reason, Michonne feels that she needs to "see" the Sanctuary for herself.  Okay...why?  Everyone that was there has been reporting back on what's been going on (via letters apparently, no carrier pigeons in the apocalypse clearly).  Alexandria, The Kingdom and The Hilltop all seem to be aware of what's going on and the progress and setbacks experienced.  For that reason, I would've found it a lot more believable if these two ladies felt that they were tired of sitting on the sidelines and wanted to help in the battle.  THAT I would've understood much more than, hey, let's go drive (2) hours away to the Sanctuary to "see" it.  See the difference?

When we leave these four (after Daryl and Tara essentially save Michonne and Rosita from the two Saviors they fought that were trying to transport "The Fat Lady", the brilliant music speaker truck), they are at the Sanctuary with Daryl saying that they need to "end this".  Whatever in the world that means.

Back at the Hilltop, Maggie is still having to contend with what to do with all the Savior prisoners that Jesus brought back.  Jesus clearly believes that these POW's essentially need to be treated with respect since they are defenseless.  He even goes as far as to feed them, something that infuriates Maggie since they are running on limited supplies for the people of the community.  Gregory appeals to the other end of the spectrum by telling Maggie that she has every right to ignore that "hippie" Jesus (Ha, good one) but Maggie is not completely sold on his idea of simply slaughtering the prisoners.  She finally comes to a conclusion and Gregory thinks that the prisoners are being led to the gallows (FORESHADOWING FOR COMIC BOOK FANS) but instead the prisoners are being lead to a sort of chicken coup barbed wire enclosure.  A Savior internment camp, if you will.  Gregory still feels that people that aren't trusted should be taken very seriously and Maggie agrees meaning, Gregory got thrown into the coup too.  I have to say, I felt bad for Gregory at this moment, seeing him so fearful of being incarcerated with the Saviors.  So I did feel bad...for a moment.  I'm sure that'll change.

Was this a good decision versus poor decision?  We'll have to wait and see, particularly since we have Jarrid the Savior eager to free himself of his restraints and then we have the new Dean the Savior who wants to play nice and not get everyone killed.  This could all go really well OR could all go really bad.  Time will tell...

To be noted, Enid and Aaron, both currently assisting Maggie at the Hilltop, have decided to drop off Baby Gracie (I still say that baby will play a major role on this show, mark my words) and go off to "win" this war.  Huh?  ANOTHER suicide mission?  Did these people not hear about Rick's plan?

We also get to see Carl exploring by himself in the woods again (*sigh*) and he tracks down Siddiq, the wanderer they meet a few episodes back who Rick shot at.  Carl actually asks him the (3) Questions (remember those???) and they become a little zombie killing team, mostly due to Carl's reckless (yet again) decision to kill a few zombies to honor Siddiq's mom.  Fortunately they manage to get out alive, in spite of poor decision making on attacking those walkers.  But, good judgement call on Siddiq (COMIC BOOK FANS, YOU KNOW).

The only overall respective course of action in this whole cesspool of poor decision making was at The Kingdom with Carol, Ezekiel, Jerry and little Henry.  Jerry is still holding down his post because dammit, he still respects the King and that's his job.  Little Henry (the younger brother of Benjamin, the Kingdom Knight that was killed by Jarrid the Savior) has finally pursued Carol to allow him to follow her because she needs fighters and he wants to avenge his brother's death.  Here's hoping little Henry will be the one to deal the final blow to Jarrid...

But in addition to that piece, is Carol's confrontation of King Ezekiel in his theater/receiving office.  He is a broken man, having lost all of his knights and of course, Shiva.  He is sitting on the floor of the stage with Shiva's chains in his hands, still not able to face his people.  Carol continuously tries to convince Ezekiel that his people need him to LEAD, and to not lay down defeated but he is incredibly resistant to her words.  We get an inkling from their interaction that there is clearly a romantic situation brewing here but I don't want to gloss over an amazing piece of monologue from Carol where she talks about how she essentially faked it every single day until it became the norm, and she's still standing.  YES CAROL.  That is why you are Queen of the Apocalypse. Despite all that, unfortunately, Ezekiel is still not budging.

And that was the episode folks: Rick locked up naked in the Garbage People's trailer with the letter "A" marked off (much like at Terminus...hmmmm....) waiting for the Calvary to come, who are all busy on suicide missions.  Smart.

[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 4 of The Walking Dead, "The Obliged"

By Carolina Gallardo (@carolgallardo)

Episode 4 of the "The Walking Dead" entitled "The Obliged" centers around the various obligations that many of our character's are begrudgingly going along with, even when they aren't necessarily fully convinced themselves.  We also see what happens when vigilante justice mentality takes full reign and...the beginning of the end of Rick Grimes???  Where to start??  I suppose from the beginning...

We get to see before the credits even roll, an opening sequence of a day in the life of Michonne.  We get to see that during the day, Michonne is fulfilling her daily obligations of working on a new government charter (remember, Michonne WAS a lawyer in her previous life), taking care of toddler Judith as well as general governing of Alexandria.  This includes tending to the sick, breaking up petty squabbles and the like.  But at night, we see a restless Michonne unable to sleep.  It's at this point that she grabs her katana, goes outside (all unbeknownst to Rick) and unleashes her warrior self toward walkers that she purposely attracts.  We've seen this from Michonne before when they FIRST arrived at Alexandria and she still felt the need to keep her fighting skills sharp (no pun intended) by battling walkers at night, behind everyone's back.

In any case we see that this has become a (seemingly) daily habit, culminating in one evening when she is momentarily distracted by a walker hung from a tree.  The walker seems relatively fresh and his hands are bound which leads me to wonder WHO hung this person from the tree BEFORE they turned into a walker?  Clearly this was no accident.  Michonne seems to be thinking the same thing and as a result, a walker sneaks up on her and the katana falls to the ground, as she battles against the walker, she grabs the nearest thing to her which just HAPPENS to be a baseball bat.  The visual of the bloody bat seems to bring back horrific memories (ie, Negan) and she immediately drops it on site and runs.

Now.  My question is: Was THAT Lucille?  Or was that another random bat that was left behind?  Something to think about.

Back at the Hilltop, Maggie's informed that she's received another letter from Georgie.  She quickly disregards and says that she'll read it later.  She leaves baby Hershel with help and asks Jesus to watch over the community while she goes attend to some business (after she packs a crowbar in her knapsack).  Jesus is no fool and knows EXACTLY where Maggie is headed and what her intentions are but as much as he pleads with her, Maggie's mind is set and she's off.  Jesus then alerts the Calvary essentially, which results in Jerry contacting Rick to let him know that Maggie's on her way.  And that's ALL that has to be said to understand what that means.  Rick immediately radioed one the posts, stating that she is not allowed entry without permission and escorting.  Unfortunately, that all falls on deaf ears since the post is manned by a member of Oceanside/a Maggie Sympathizer.  She ignores his warning and goes back to her magazine (can you imagine reading an old magazine during the apocalypse?  Talk about nostalgia).  Daryl then of all people (red flag) offers to give Rick a ride to Alexandria, which Rick of course takes him up on.  In the meantime, the river is rising and the bridge will likely not hold for much longer, especially in light of the incoming walker herds, according to Eugene.

Back at Alexandria however, Michonne is forced to have some one on one time with Negan.  She's informed by one of the members of the community that Negan is on a hunger strike and is not eating.  She visits his cell to ensure that he eats but what ends up happening is a discussion between these two warriors.  Negan correctly identifies that Michonne IS a warrior and that this domestic goddess role is not who she truly is.  They also confide in each other about their past: Negan's wife passing away from cancer without them ever being able to have a child of their own, something he always wanted.  Michonne's own son Andre passing away when the Apocalypse hit, simply "not making it".  This is company that Negan DEEPLY relishes, since he is basically relegated to solitary confinement (poor guy...yes, I am a Negan apologist).  Eventually though, he hits a raw nerve with her, stating that it was probably for the best that his wife and her son passed away because they would've held them back from being strong.  At this comment, Michonne bristles and storms out...only to eventually return and resume her conversations with Negan.  She ensures him that she is not like him and she doesn't relish fighting but she wants to make the world better for her daughter (IE, Judith).  He then begins to question her on the whereabouts of his Lucille, to which Michonne replies that she likely is still out there but she's not clear on her whereabouts.  This sends Negan into a frenzy, wailing about wanting to be reunited with his "Lucille" (more likely his wife, then the bat itself).  He then begins beating his head against the wall, in a sort of attempt to knock himself out, perhaps sadly even kill himself and put himself out of his own torture.

Meanwhile, we return to the junkyard where we see that Father Gabriel has been tied to a gurney, much like Negan was when he was held by Jadis at the junkyard.  He comes to and sees that Jadis is about to unleash a walker on Gabriel to finish him off and kill him.  He then puts his heart on his sleeve and pleads with Jadis, appealing to her better judgement, while also coming to terms with what is about to happen.  Jadis ends up tearfully changing her mind...but drugs Gabriel with some sort of chlorophyll cloth, effectively knocking him out.  Yet again.  When he comes to, he finds a note simply stating:

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.  I need to go fast.

Father Gabriel is left devastated and alone.

Finally, Daryl and Rick are (supposedly) en route to Alexandria, until Rick finally realizes that this is not the route to Alexandria.  Long overdue, the two men hop off the bike and confront each other.  It's made abundantly clear that Daryl is trying to prevent Rick from getting to Alexandria and stopping Maggie and that the post is also in firm agreement with them.  Push comes to shove (literally) and the two men come to blows, eventually landing in a sort of sinkhole.  During this time in the hole, the two men hash out their conflicting positions.  Daryl states emphatically that he would've died for Carl or for Rick, but Rick's mission to "save" everyone including Negan isn't doing any justice to Carl's memory and is actually sullying the memory of Glenn, Abraham and Sasha.  As much as Rick protests against Daryl's points, Daryl insists that he just needs to "Let it Go".  This heartfelt conversation is cut short due to the sound of gunshots coming back from the camp.  Unbeknownst to them, a faction of the Saviors have come to incite their revenge on Carol and her crew, which breaks out into gunfire.  This gunfire in turn, attracts the walker herds that Eugene has been warning them all about for some time.  As  result, these walkers start stumbling into the sinkhole, ramping up the sense of urgency to get out of there.  Rick uses a tree root to help leverage him out of the hole and Daryl then uses some of the walkers he's able to kill as building blocks to climb higher but it's still not quite enough.  Rick leverages a nearby wiry branch to hold on to and asks Daryl, his pseudo-brother, to take his hand, to essentially trust him.  Daryl luckily does and he is pulled into safety.  They then take out a few walkers before realizing that the massive herds are coming and they need to divert them as well as warn the others.  Rick mounts his white horse (subliminal messaging much?) and informs Daryl that he'll work on diverting the herd and that he needs to go back and warn the others.  Against all of Daryl's warnings, he chooses to lead the herd away from the bridge to, well, someplace else.

Unfortunately, Rick's plan falls apart when his horse is spooked by the trailing walkers, causing Rick to fall off and land on some concrete, in the process impaling him on a piece of rebar.  UGH.  To say that scene was uncomfortable to watch would be an understatement.

So that's where we leave off.  Rick lying impaled on the floor, as the two massive herds slowly shuffle closer and closer.  This.  Does.  Not.  Look.  Good.
