[RECAP] Season 10, Episode 5 of The Walking Dead, "What it Always Is"

div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Little pig, little pig...LET ME IN.  So after episode 5 of this season of The Walking Dead, are more fans FINALLY letting Negan into their black little hearts?  I certainly hope so!  This episode continues to follow Negan on his wild journey to redemption (with a sort of “Oh Brother Where Art Thou” vibe), albeit an unconventional one.  While this is certainly the main storyline, episode 5 is filled with substance from various storylines all happening at the same time, set on a sure fire collision course, and the repercussions are still very much undetermined at this point.

But let’s go through each specific storyline since we have quite a few to get through:

GAMMA & THE WHISPERERS...& AARON
We get to see Gamma again and, via some conversations between Gamma, Alpha and Beta, we get confirmation that the Whisperers are indeed behind some of the various nefarious incidents that have occurred (the tree falling on the Hilltop’s border, the waves of walkers on Alexandria, etc).  Alpha is essentially playing the long game and is trying to wear down our heroes to a point of submission and/or to a point where conquering them will be an easy feat.

As an additional point of wearing down our heroes, Gamma has been tasked with essentially poisoning the water supply by spilling walker guts and blood into the river.  Biowarfare is a very real thing folks.  We do see however cracks in the membrane as Gamma has a momentary breakdown and lets out all her pent up frustration over the ways of The Whisperers, the death of her sister, all on her walker “Guardian” (a fellow Whisperer that was brutally murdered by Alpha by offering their feedback...no democracy here).  In her stabbing ferocity, she accidentally gives herself a pretty bad gash on her hand...only to be thrown some gauze by a hovering Aaron (who shares that he’s from Vermont...interesting right?).

Like a little timid mouse, Gamma silently takes the gauze and scurries away back to the Whisperer camp.  She seems almost afraid to show Alpha her bandaged hand, in fear that Alpha might see that as a betrayal.  Instead, Alpha sees this as another calculated opportunity to potentially entice Aaron and find yet another way to attack Alexandria and the Hilltop via another source.  But who’s side is Gamma ultimately on?

KELLY & MAGNA
The start of the episode focuses on Kelly wandering in the woods, roaming around in a bit of a muffled daze, further illustrating the deterioration of her hearing.  And why was she out there?  Apparently to hide goods and supplies, in conjunction with Magna, who has been in on this whole thing for some time.  Ultimately they are found and retrieved by Daryl and Connie (more on that later) and when Yumiko finds out that Kelly and Magna were swiping supplies, she’s not surprised.  It’s at this moment that we find out that Magna had been in jail for seemingly acting in retaliation toward an attacker of her niece (it’s not clear if the crime toward her niece was a murder, a rape, etc) and she still seems to harbor a sense of mistrust of everyone in general (hence the secret stockpiling).  Magna also seems to have a bit of chip on her shoulder that Yumiko was this (apparently) fancy pants lawyer with fancy degrees before the world fell apart and throws that back in her face, which seems to really hurt her.

So where do we go from here with this information?  I’m not quite so sure...getting all this backstory would make one think that it has to be relevant for a reason but what the reason is yet is still not quite clear (at least not to me).

DARYL & CONNIE
Ah, Connie and Daryl.  Or “Donnie” as many wishful fans call the two.  They go out in the woods to find Kelly, once it’s known that she’s gone missing.  During the tracking in the woods, these two continue to get to know each other more by way of sign language and writing in Connie’s notepad.  It’s a very interesting dynamic to say the least.  Connie seems to blame herself for Kelly’s disappearance but Daryl is supportive and ensures her that she shouldn’t go that route.  He even shares an old memory of his brother Merle (man, that’s a name we don’t hear often right?) that makes Connie laugh...and even go as far as take Daryl’s hand (*gasp*).

Ultimately, they end up finding a wounded Kelly and a hovering (didn’t she kind of look like a walker in that moment??) Magna along with the stolen goods.  Daryl is livid at this revelation but Connie tells him that they’ll bring it all back to the camp and tell them that they “found” the goods while they were out looking for Kelly.  She’s apologetic later to Daryl for the behavior of Kelly and Magna but Daryl understands and says, hey, they’re family: I get it.  But I mean, you know, in his own Daryl way.

KING EZEKIEL
Poor King Ezekiel.  He’s already been having a tough go of it what with the loss of...well everything that he’s had right?  We saw in last week’s episode that he’s been borderline suicidal as of late and we attributed it to all the loss, already discussed.  What we DIDN’T realize is that in reality, there’s another reason altogether for King Ezekiel’s behavior: Turns out that he has a significant growth on his throat/neck that seems to be an indicator that he is going through thyroid cancer (a disease apparently hereditary in his family).  Before the apocalypse, the survival rate from this type of cancer was quite high actually but sadly during these new times, Ezekiel essentially knows it’s a death sentence.  Siddiq is the one who uncovers all this and he tries to console him and gave him some sage advice which boils down to not going through this alone and sharing this information with his loved ones.

He comes close to doing this on the ham radio when he’s almost connected with Carol to speak with her but before that can happen, he opts to end the connection.  In truth, how do you have that conversation with anyone and let them know if your fatal diagnosis (apocalypse or not)?  And more importantly how in the world is JERRY going to take all of this??

NEGAN & BRANDON....& THE WHISPERERS
And finally our main attraction: Negan & Brandon.  Who is Brandon?  Apparently a sociopathic teenager that was Negan's keeper and has been OBSESSED with him, since his father's former Savior days.  Important to note however is that Brandon was NOT the one who freed Negan, since Brandon at one point in their journey asks him if he'll ever tell him how he got out of the cell (Negan ignores him of course).  No, Brandon is just an obsessed sociopath that follows Negan's footsteps and even went as far as to bring to him his leather jacket and a makeshift Lucille, as an offering, if you will.  Negan refuses to handle either, saying that it'll make him an easy target for anyone trying to find him.

Instead, Negan and Brandon come across an adorable little boy named Miles and his mother trapped in what appears to be a Greyhound bus.  Negan goes into high gear and goes in and saves both mother and son from peril, even having some light hearted, one-on-one uncle type chat with young Miles.  This moment made me incredibly wistful for what COULD HAVE BEEN with Carl, but at the same time, we are least getting glimpses of these moments with Negan and Miles and obviously between Negan and Judith.  Negan however, wants NOTHING to do with Brandon since he can very easily tell that he is a complete psycho.  After he basically tells him to get lost and has a great heart to heart with Miles, he goes off to scavenge for wood, knowing that it'll be dark soon and he'll need to start getting a fire going quick.

Sadly, when he returns, he comes to find Brandon back, whistling the old familiar Savior tune, and standing over the bodies of both little Miles and his mother, having killed them both to "prove" himself.  P-S-Y-C-H-O.  Before Brandon can finish uttering the famous line "I am Negan" Negan beats his face in with a rock and brutally kills him, letting out all his grief for what this deranged teen did to this innocent family.  He then picks up his leather jacket, puts it on, takes his Lucille 2.0 and walks off into the unknown.

After dark, Negan roams the woods, in the hunt for...perhaps the Whisperers?  Knowing that they're out there...baiting them?  He confidently strolls and talks loudly trying to draw them in, even stating the phase "Little Pig, Little Pig..." just as he did when banged on the gates of Alexandria asking them to let him in.  This finally does draw some walkers in a great scene in the dark, but under the gaze of moonlight.  He immediately begins taking down walkers with his new Lucille, just as old Negan used to do until...he is violently thrown to the ground and he turns and notices that he isn't surrounded by walkers anymore.  He's surrounded by Whisperers.  Including a hulking, angry Beta.  GAME ON.

For me the biggest curiosity, will be how the show handles the interaction between Alpha and Negan, because it'll be a HUGE indicator of what direction the show will now go in.  Will the show stay true to the comic material?  Or will it diverge from it and let Carol (potentially) be the one to enact her revenge on Alpha?

What happens next on the show will surely set the stage for some heavy material to come...

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9:00pm EST on AMC.

We had a very wacky time with @Nightmareon3lm (the only soul brave enough to take up our offer for ☕#Kofi-backers to help host the latest podcast), along with Chris from BMNY DeadCast, and Rachael (AKA @Cosmomom09). Our pre & post-show is patent insanity: I dunno WHAT happened in the pre-show, but I do remember our post-show, watching YouTube videos of 17-year-olds attempting to use a rotary phone, which was hilarious, as well as the G.I. Joe over-dubbed PSAs - classic YouTube hilariousness that made us cry with laughter.

[PREDICTIONS] Season 9, Episode 15 of The Walking Dead, "The Calm Before"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

Typically, I would be sitting here writing up a recap of what we just saw on the The Walking Dead, but this is a special blog post focusing on my PREDICTIONS for tomorrow's extremely critical episode entitled, "The Calm Before".  While the title of this episode seems to give the illusion that this will be more of a "set-up" episode, I am predicting that some major events from the comic will finally come to fruition during episode 15.  Before moving any further, please note that this posting will include MAJOR SPOILERS therefore if you want to be surprised tomorrow night I would recommend to stop reading right NOW.  Otherwise, you've been warned...

In the comics, the fair is a very significant event because it is where the Whisperers infiltrate the festivities as normal, average visitors.  By the time it's all said and done, we come to find out that Alpha and her crew have brutally murdered 12 attendees and have placed their heads on pikes that they use to create a border between their area and everyone else's land.

In the comic, it is Rick, Andrea and Michonne that come across the heads on pikes over a hill.  Obviously, Rick is no longer on the show (for NOW, more on my thoughts on THAT in a moment), so it'll play out a little differently, but I would imagine that the general story line will remain the same.  Based on some photo stills from the episode, I'm thinking that Daryl and Yumiko will be the ones that find the Heads on Pikes Border.

So how DO I think it'll play out on the show?  It's hard to say how we'll arrive at the end game of the "Heads on Pikes" moment.  But in terms of WHO'S head will be on a pike, my thoughts is that it'll be a general mixed bag of nuts, with some deaths being more significant than others, but all deaths being significant enough to mobilize someone ELSE into action.  Here's what I'm thinking:

  1. Cindy from Oceanside
    1. Her death would spark a call to arms of the otherwise reclusive community
  2. Laura (aka, Neck Tattoo), former Savior
    1. Not a major character, but her tattoo would make her a recognizable head on a pike and might strike a nerve with any former Saviors.
  3. Gabe (teen)
    1. Definitely not a major character, but you've got to throw in some fillers.
  4. Addie (teen with glasses)
    1. Again, not a major character but her glasses would make her head recognizable on a pike.
  5. Tammy Rose
    1. Brett Butler's character's has received significant airtime for a fairly new character.  Her hopefulness with her husband Earl on now raising the adorable Whisperer baby make her a major target.  I could see her death being the catalyst that would incite Earl into activity and that's what these deaths are meant to do.
  6. Dianne (archer), Kingdom Knight
    1. Dianne's been a loyal Kingdom Knight since we met King Ezekiel so losing her would likely strike a chord with Carol, most significantly, since the two often went out on missions together.
  7. Tara
    1. UGH.  Now, hear me out: I don't HATE Tara.  But let's be honest, she's been skating by too long and the fact that she's still alive over such martial characters such as Glenn, Abraham, Sasha & Jesus (to name a few) is shocking.  This might be her moment to bow out.
  8. Kelly (Connie's Sister)
    1. Along the lines of deaths that mobilize others and unite the communities, the death of Kelly would hit her sister Connie extremely hard and would heighten her interest in banding together with Daryl to fight even more so.  This would also drive Magna, Yumiko and Luke to want to join the other communities and take up the fight against the Whisperers.
  9. Enid
    1. This one is a shame.  I think Enid is an adorable character that's evolved so much from her "JSS" days to the confident medic we see now, happily in a relationship with Alden.  Well, it's precisely FOR those reasons that I think she will be killed off.  She found peace and happiness and in this world, that's a major no-no.
  10. Nabila (Jerry's Wife)
    1. Again, I really love Nabila and her relationship with Jerry and the beautiful loving family that they have created but again, in this world, that's basically a death sentenance.  It's either going to be Nabila or Jerry and because I really love Jerry, I'm HOPING the show doesn't choose to kill him off but again, you really never know.
  11. Rosita
    1. Yup, sad but true.  In the comics, Rosita is indeed pregnant with Siddiq's baby.  Now in the comics, Rosita is with Eugene and, similar to Father Gabriel, he loves Rosita so much that he accepts that the baby is not his.  Sadly, Rosita is one of those murdered by Alpha and her death (and of course the baby's death) tears Eugene apart.  I would expect the show to follow this story beat by beat but her and the baby's death haunting Father Gabriel, Siddiq AND Eugene.  My guess is that this will drive all of these men to be major players in the Whisperer War arc for the next season.  Sorry Rosita but you had an amazing run (definitely more than most) and that's pretty impressive.
  12. King Ezekiel
    1. Yup, you read right.  The most significant Head on a Pike in the comics is the revelation of King Ezekiel's death.  The site of King Ezekiel's decapitated head on a pike in the comic is so gut wrenching that it brings Rick to his knees.  I am expecting his death to be THE most significant of all the deaths we'll see tomorrow night and the death that will motivate ALL the communities to UNITE, in his honor, and defeat the Whisperers as one unified voice.  Sadly however, his death will likely all but devaste Carol, who will go back to being Warrior Carol, short hair and all.  My guess is that SHE will ultimately be the one to kill off Alpha (not Negan, as in the comics), again, in honor of her fallen King and love.  I mean, can you imagine anyone else being the one to take her down?

So those are my thoughts.  There are many people that predict that Father Gabriel or even Eugene could be potential victims with their heads on pikes.  I disagree because I believe that Father Gabriel will feel emboldened enough to take up the fight against Alpha, which might lead him to receive his grisly comic book death dealt by Beta.  It's such an iconic death in the comic, I have to imagine that SOMEONE on the show will experience that.  Also, when it comes to Eugene, while I can't see him necessarily FIGHTING, I believe that his significance will tie into that ham radio that he and Rosita were setting up antennae for.

Which leads me to my BIG prediction for the season finale:  I believe that because Eugene set up that antennae with Rosita on the water tower, he will ultimately make radio contact with none other than the Great Rick Grimes.  I firmly believe that before the season finale is over, in the last few minutes, we will make contact with Rick Grimes and we will be left to wonder for 6 months WHERE Rick is (*cough* Commonwealth *cough*) and WHAT will happen now.  It would make for an amazing finale and a nice cap to a pretty awesome season for the show.

But this show has proven time and time again to expect the unexpected so we'll have to all tune in on Sunday to see who's left standing, after the dust all settles.

🤯You do NOT know what's coming your way (talk about Hunted, right?): Rachael & Dave are about to blow your mind with some incredible predictions that you won't get anywhere else. @MegTheGeek & @BlazyGardener phone-in some great insights that Rach & Dave dissect along the way. Either way, #TWD gave us some incredible concepts to play with this episode! ...We can only hope the 18 remaining episodes are just as playful!
Not much pre-show and post-show in the Unedited Recording of this Episode; HOWEVER, we do regale you with some personal stories and some observations that didn't quite make it into the final edit that you may find valuable if you are interested in going a little deeper (both on #WalkingDead & SQUAWKING DEAD)! For that and so much more, head here:

David Cameo:
Rachael Burt:

  • Rachael’s Instagram Photoshoot by Jeff Hildebrant @iamjhil
  • Sherrandy’s take: The Four Horsewomen of the ApocalypseCarol Peletier, Kelly, Magna, and Rosita Espinosa.
  • Rosita’s dream about Abraham Ford: What's he trying to tell her?
  • Why Magna pleads with Carol to stop giving Kelly hope of finding Connie.
  • We all missed Greg Nicotero take a bite out of Agatha! Sherrandy was giddy at the thought Maggie Rhee might've been the one who got bit.
  • Rachael feeling unsettled about Father Gabriel losing his faith: we are getting our What If scenario as a result of him surviving The Water Tower (from the Comic Book).
  • When the utterance BOPE-BARKED-EWE is as legendary #Ekekiel (never forget).
  • The Reapers are definitely a religious group. What will it mean for Gabriel when he truly encounters them?
  • What if the Reaper "Nichols" isn’t real? Is Gabe is hallucinating/killing his faith?
  • Faith is a heavy theme throughout this episode: finding the horses & leaving Alden behind (hopeful he survives). Even Negan saving Maggie (Maggie having taken a chance on Savior Alden) proves that, with faith people can change.
  • The Reapers are perhaps the scariest group we’ve met so far, besides Civic Republic Military.
  • King Ezekiel may be the one to peek behind The Commonwealth's curtain (taking on Dwight's role in the Comic Book).

  • Meg's take: Legendary action-packed opening minutes. Is there a Judas in our group?
  • Rachael is very mad that Cole died, after shipping Aaron and he (replacement Paul "Jesus" Rovia)
  • @fftcocoon says what most of us were thinking: Maggie’s people were not supposed to last (and the impact was supposed to accentuate Maggie's loss even further). Even Duncan points out how lucky everyone has been:
  • Please stop the Maggie hate: our friend from Insider, Kirsten Acuna, spoke with Angela Kang and they are not trying to vilify her.
  • Meg's critique over the use of the close-up shots with Maggie in the opening scene (lighting, close-up, vs darkness in wideshot). Rachael & Dave still felt what Maggie must've felt.
  • Judith Grimes, Gracie, Hershel Rhee, and R.J. Grimes eating horse and speaking like little adults. Hershel's from "the streets". Saying "I'll be home soon" as a relic or comfort (for whom?).
  • Will Alden (who was a former member of The Saviors) pull through? Perhaps receive Father Gabriel’s comic book death?
  • The mystery of the dead horses by the river bank. Yet again, our short-lived friend, Sanjay (from Fear The Walking Dead 6x02 Welcome to the Club) teaches us about what walkers are attracted to the most.
  • Even the back up plan of getting supplies from Georgie's drop, is ruined by The Reapers.
