[RECAP] Season 9, Episode 5 of The Walking Dead, "What Comes After"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

By Carolina Gallardo (@carolgallardo)

Well, after much marketing and hype by AMC, we have finally arrived at what has been continuously billed as "Rick Grimes' Final Episode".  Only...it is and it isn't his final episode.  And what's more?  It was probably the best, most exciting episode in YEARS.  Confused?  Let's elaborate.

When we last left off our hero, Rick Grimes was left lying on a piece of concrete, impaled on a some rebar, as two converging herds slowly neared.  We can see that he is dipping in and out of consciousness with the phase "What is your wound?" being asked by a male voice, popping in and out throughout the episode.  He eventually comes to after hallucinating that he was talking to his comatose self at the hospital and telling himself to "WAKE UP" (and seeing a swarm helicopters, *hint hint*).  When he comes to, he sees the looming heard and he uses his belt to throw it on a higher piece of rebar and (ugh, I want to close my eyes just typing this) pull himself off the piece that impaled him.  That was without a doubt one of the most cringe worthy, painful scenes ever filmed on this show that I had to watch.  And listen, when your own husband has to turn his head because he cant stomach watching the scene, you KNOW it's intense.

In any case, he's able to get off, hold his wound to prevent himself from completely bleeding out and hoists himself onto his white horse, starting to lead the herd away from the area.  And so begins, Rick Grimes' journey to find and protect his family.  What follows are a series of hallucinations during his route, that occur at points where Rick is losing strength and is knocking on death's door.  These are the moments where he has contact with some of his lost loved ones, who provide guidance, support and remind him to "WAKE UP".

But before we get to Rick's story (obviously the significant story), we need to address the Maggie-Negan confrontation.  Maggie ends up arriving at Alexandria and eventually ends up convincing Michonne to allow her to see Negan, even though Michonne knows that Maggie simply wants to kill Negan.  Maggie enters Negan's quarters and he immediately starts egging her on, trying to incite her anger.  This begins to work but Maggie wants to see his face and asks him to step into the light and get on his knees.  Losing her patience, she grabs him and flings him against a wall.  It's at this point that Negan breaks down into tears and implores Maggie TO kill him.  That this is something he is not able to do himself and that her killing him would finally set him free and would allow him to be his loved one, his wife Lucille.  Maggie then realizes Negan is in a far worse place mentally than she ever could've imagined and therefore she leaves him to suffer in his own personal hell.  The absolute tearful, broken site of Negan in this scene was utterly heartbreaking but again, I am a Negan apologist so do with that information what you will. Regardless, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was incredible in this scene and it needs to be said and noted.

Now back to Rick: The first hallucination comes when Rick takes a break in a cabin to tend to his wound and it involves *gasp* Shane!  YES.  Shane Walsh himself, the original bad ass.  Rick and Shane sit in their old police car and catch up and joke, just the way they would've done back when they were partners.  Shane even goes so far as to ask Rick how's his little girl and does she have my eyes?  OUCH.  Shane bold as hell, even in the afterlife.  Seriously though, Shane fully acknowledges that Rick needed to do what he did, after Rick apologizes for of course, being the one that killed him.  Shane tells him that he understands and that he takes full credit for the evolution of Rick Grimes from Officer Friendly to a savage beast that would bite a man's throat out and hack threatening forces in a church (yes, Rick Grimes did all that), if need be.  He tells him he always knew he had it in him and those situations prove it.  When Rick tries to tell him that he's just a guy looking for his family, Shane tells him that he shouldn't be here and he needs to WAKE UP

Rick wakes up just in the nick of time, since walkers start to descend on the cabin and he narrowly escapes and climbs back on the horse.  He continues on and his next hallucination involves *tear* Hershel.  Rick is back on the farm with Hershel and he is especially emotional, apologizing for not doing more to be able to save his life.  Hershel assures him that he's fine and that he knows his daughter (Maggie) is strong and now with a child, she is even stronger.  Rick talks about being tired and continues to insist about seeing his family but Hershel assures him that this is not the place he needs to be and that he needs to WAKE UP.

Again, Rick wakes up and continues on, still losing a significant amount of blood and still slipping in out of consciousness.  We see that he's on a trajectory heading to the bridge, as Daryl recommended that he should.  As he starts to slip again, he has another hallucination where he is back at the hospital (IE the pilot episode).  He is walking down the same hallways but this time he unlocks and opens the doors labeled "DO NOT OPEN; DEAD OUTSIDE".  Upon opening the door, he is greeted with a bright light and he finds himself standing on a horizon completely filled with bodies.  Bodies of some that have already passed, bodies of people he knows are alive right now.  Eventually, Sasha stands up from the sea of bodies and talks to Rick.  He is again apologetic but Sasha reassures him that it is all a cycle and that everything that we all learn and help each other and pass that along.  But most importantly, he needs to WAKE UP.

He finally does and he is back at the campsite, horse now gone.  The campsite is deserted (seriously, what happened after the firefight?  Well, I guess it doesn't really matter now) but the walkers are overrunning it.  Rick manages to get a few head shots in, even while mortally wounded (what a bad ass) but then realizes he needs to get out of there and fast.

He then begins the slow arduous task of dragging himself, limping, toward the infamous bridge. It's at this point that we see the whole cavalry squad arrive and run over the bridge and start taking out all the walkers.  Michonne embraces the wounded Rick and tells him that she loves him because he is such a fighter but...none of this is real.  And he needs to WAKE UP.

He then finally comes to, alone, on the bridge.  The walkers start advancing over the bridge but unfortunately the bridge does not give and they just keep on coming.  This time, however, the cavalry really DOES show up and it is REAL.  They are not on the bridge but rather below the bridge and Daryl starts shooting walkers to prevent Rick from getting bit.  Michonne, Carol and Maggie on their part, run with a terrified urgency to try to get to Rick before it's too late.  Unfortunately, Rick notes the dynamite on the bridge that had been used in a previous episode to clear an area.  He utters that he "found them", his family, and he then shoots the dynamite which promptly triggers a huge explosion, blowing up the bridge and, we assume, himself in the process.  Michonne is devastated and her crumbling on the ground, being restrained by Maggie and Carol was utterly wrenching to watch.  And if that wasn't enough, Daryl's face crumpling into tears and dejectedly walking away likely put you over the edge.

But...it's not over yet.  Rule #1 of The Walking Dead: Until you see a body, it's not official.

We then see Jadis, in communication via her walkie talkie with the helicopter again, and this time, she is by the river stream flowing with walkers from the bridge.  Not only that, the camera pans and we then see Rick Grimes STILL ALIVE, but obviously insured, washed ashore by the river.  Jadis sees him and immediately radios the helicopter stating that she doesn't have an A but she does have a B and this B is a friend who desperately needs aid.  The helicopter obliges her deal and it touches down and we even start hearing the song "Space Junk" from the end of the pilot episode when Rick was stuck in the tank (did you catch that?).  While in the helicopter (where he is asked what his wound is), Jadis accompanies him and assures him that he will be in excellent shape and that he's going to a place with all the resources he needs.  Rick gives her a quizzical look but considering he has an oxygen tank hooked up to him and he is in a comfortable helicopter, what CAN he say?  The helicopter then whisks them away to...well, that is a question that apparently will be answered at a future date.

The episode could've ended here and it would've been totally acceptable but instead, we see the landscape change and we get the impression that time has passed.  At this point, we are not clear on how much time exactly.  We then see a new group of survivors fighting against a group of walkers that have them effectively surrounded.  All of a sudden though, shots ring out and the walkers start to drop.  A young girl's voice instructs them to follow her into the clearing in the woods and they promptly do.  Once there, they see that the voice came from a little girl, likely no more than 10 years old...but she has Rick's gun, Michonne's katana and Carl's hat.  Her name, as she introduces herself, is Judith.  JUDITH GRIMES.

*MIND BLOWN*

The episode ends here with some previews to the remaining three episodes until the mid-season finale.  It is clear that the departure of Rick Grimes is obviously something to be missed.  However, it needs to be said, that Angela Kang and her team of writers found a way to write the character of Rick Grimes out of the show, majestically and honorably...but not out of the story.  His story will continue in another medium which will allow the further development of the current story line and characters which definitely feels incredibly exciting, particularly with "Little Ass Kicker" at the helm.

Dare I say it, has "The Walking Dead" become Sunday night's Must See TV again?  I think it actually has.

Rachael Burt:
Sherrandy Swift:
Bridget Mason-Gray:

NUMBER 5

  • Sherrandy: Honor (8x09)

Carl Grimes dies and even though Sherrandy knew it was coming (she binge-watched The Walking Dead in order to catch up with us), she still had an emotional breakdown.
  • Rachael: No Way Out (6x09)
    • Alexandria Safe-Zone's walls are breached and whether they were survivors or the original residents, everyone came together to protect their home.
    • Carl's eye is shot out and he and Rick Grimes have a heartfelt conversation about the value of both Alexandria and even its softer original residents.
    • Eugene Porter & Denise Cloyd really step-up.
    • Daryl Dixon blows up The Saviors he, Sasha Williams, and Abraham Ford encounter on the road.
    • Carol Peletier gets into a row with Morgan Jones over refusing to kill one of The Wolves he captures. Bridget notes that although she doesn't agree with Morgan's idea, she really appreciated that it ended up bearing fruit when his captive shows compassion towards Denise.
    • Takeerah, A.J., Mitchell, and Aidan had this episode on their list.
  • Bridget: Morning Star (10x11)

    • It was hard for everyone to not choose episodes from the early seasons; however, Bridget chose this episode because of some of the inter-personal struggles between Carol and King Ezekiel Sutton, as well as she and Daryl, along with some of the ratcheted tension and battle tactics/sequences.
    • It also moved the storyline along quite a bit after not enjoying much of The Whisperers story arc.

NUMBER 4

  • Sherrandy: One More (10x18)
    • You don't have to enjoy whiskey to appreciate the calm that is present throughout most of the episode, but combined with the terror and suspense at the end, it makes for a pretty incredible vignette.
    • Even the beautiful cinematography appropriately contributed to the mood it was attempting to establish.
    • The terrifying manner in which Rachael almost loses one of her not-so-favorite characters, Father Gabriel Stokes, even gave her pause.
    • There were even a classic horror twist at the end, discovering Mays' chained-up twin brother.
    • In a single episode, we run the gamut of what The Walking Dead frequently evokes: calm moments, humor, found-family, tension, suspense, and horror.
    • Bridget mentions that this episode brought her right back to Rick's parlay with Philip "The Governor" Blake, sitting across the table drinking whiskey.
    • Even though it was largely a bottle episode, it didn't feel like one and could've easily have been an actual episode of TWD, rather than one of the bonus episodes.
  • Rachael: Consumed (5x06)

    • Beth is kidnapped by the residents at Grady Memorial Hospital and Rachael loves the way Daryl's & Carol's relationship continues to develop, in many ways.
    • Bridget mentions that this episode, as well as the ones prior and post, were strong contenders for her own Top 5 because it's one of her favorite story arcs.
  • Bridget: Claimed (4x11)
    • This episode is where Carl and Michonne's relationship truly blossoms. Rick realizes that he can't be both Carl's dad and best friend, so watching their shenanigans really makes him happy.
    • Michonne's & Carl's goofy conversation about drinking soy milk was the kind of light-hearted moment that we needed, even as it brings them right back to thinking about baby Judith Grimes and her unknown, yet seemingly terminal fate.
    • This episode also gives us more of Michonne's background by way of further conversations between she and Carl, while they're out clearing houses and Rick rests.
    • And speaking of Rick, he doesn't get to rest for very long as we witness an extremely tense, stealthy take down of some of The Claimers.
    • Sherrandy was going to place this on her list because it showed the kind of kid Carl wanted to be and how Michonne could be the kind of person that could help him achieve that desire.

NUMBER 3

  • Sherrandy: Clear (3x12)
    • Mainly chosen to further highlight the sweet dynamic between Michonne & Carl.
    • The gang move back to speaking about the latter half of season 4, recalling other sweet moments between Carl & Michonne.
    • Brian Castrillo & Kristy Boykin also placed this episode in their Top 5.
  • Rachael: Diverged (10x21)
    • Carol is at her wit's end and just needs a win, after The Whisperer war created a rift between she and Daryl (as well as many others, still).
    • Carol and Daryl literally go their separate ways (metaphorically and actually) and it's not 100% clear whether they are OK by the end of the episode.
    • Even though Dog chooses Carol at the beginning of the episode, he runs home to Daryl at the end.
    • Jerry and Carol have the most endearing scene.
    • Rachael really lets us in on how special she believes Daryl's & Carol's relationship really is... romantic or not, they would die for one another.
    • She also reminded us that this was the episode Talking Dead invited her on to, where she got to ask Melissa McBride a question.
  • Bridget: Seed (3x01)
    • Chosen mostly because it was exciting to explore the prison as a viable stronghold.
    • In the same breath, Bridget also mentions a mall is another exciting location to explore; however, Sherrandy mentions that when they did this on Fear The Walking Dead (210 Words Per Minute, 5x10), they noted that there were too many entry/exit points for people to attack.
    • Even tough the gang is a well-oiled machine, out in the wild, they are road-weary and Carl almost resorts to eating dog food.
    • And then there's, of course, Beth & Maggie Greene singing The Parting Glass.
    • This is also the same episode where they meet the inmates, too.

NUMBER 2

  • Sherrandy: Pretty Much Dead Already (2x07)
    • Mostly because Sherrandy believes Shane Walsh was right about opening the barn and taking out all the walkers Hershel Greene had been collecting in there, all this time.
    • Seeing a timid walker Sophia Peletier mirroring the way she was in life really screws with out heads as variants are now a thing and walker senators may or may not contain memories of their formerly living selves.
    • What Sherrandy loved most was how The Walking Dead is not afraid to kill children or even characters we love.
    • Though it is super hard to side with Shane given his lack of tact, it is easy to take Shane's side in the rearview given all that we know, now.
  • Rachael: Bonds (10x06)
    • In a way, Carol and Daryl are at their strongest: Daryl knows Carol is trying to hunt down Alpha, even though she is lying and says she's attempting to track down Negan.
    • Other than seeing Morgan on the toilet in FearTWD's The Code (4x11), Rachael thought it was amusing to hear Carol say she had to take a leak.
    • Of course, the hilarious banter between Negan and Beta is pure gold.
  • Bridget: Days Gone By (1x01, Series Premiere)

    • As much as the knowledge of the origin of Zombies scared Bridget as a child, watching zombie movies was something she loved. She compares Rick waking up in the hospital to one of the best scenes in the movie 28 Days Later.
    • She also watched 28 Days Later in theaters in her early teens while staying with her dad and was terrified during the entire visit! Sherrandy also shares a very similar fear of vampires as a result of watching Salem's Lot.
    • About 10 years after watching 28 Days Later, she was utterly hooked in the same way watching The Walking Dead's pilot episode.
    • In defense of Morgan, he and Duane Jones hold a dear place in her heart as a result of this episode, giving Rick a chance and showing him Mercy. Everyone else chimes in with their love as well, but qualify that they didn't like the changes in Morgan and definitely didn't like him on FearTWD.

NUMBER 1

  • Sherrandy: The Next World (6x10)
    • It's probably one of the funniest episodes in The Walking Dead Universe where some of the sequences could easily be sped up with Benny Hill background music behind it.
    • Simultaneously, Sherrandy loved the touching way Carl led a walker Deanna Monroe to Spencer Monroe in order for son to finally put down and bury mother. Carl's explanation to Michonne on why he did it was icing on the cake and showed the wonderful man he could become.

    • In the pantheon of episodes on The Walking Dead, this one made her laugh and cry the hardest.

    • and, come on, Paul "Jesus" Rovia standing at the end of Rick & Michonne's bed is absolutely gut-busting.
  • Rachael: Tell it to the Frogs (1x03)
    • As much of a dick-bag Merle Dixon is, watching him suffer while chained up on the rooftop got you feeling a little bit for him.
    • Watching Carl's worry over Rick not coming back, after being away from him for so long.
    • Now that Rick is back, there's an enormous amount of tension between Lori Grimes and Shane.
    • Rachael's favorite part is when Shane takes out his frustrations by beating the ever-loving hell out of Ed Peletier.
    • Bridget chimes in about the jokes the ladies were telling as they were doing the laundry, just beforehand.
    • It's also one of the first episodes we really get to see Carol and the origin of her suffering, which eventually turns into her strength.

    • Would Carol have become the same bad-ass person had Sophia lived?
    • And, to top it all off, Glenn Rhee zooming past Rick & Morales in the Dodge Challenger R/T.
  • Bridget: What Happened and What's Going On (5x09)
    • She loved this episode so much that she bought artist Kirk Manley's comic art rendition of it and had it signed (check out our interview with him, too)
    • Shortly after Beth's devastating passing, we witness one of the strongest characters on the show, Tyreese Williams, finally let go after all the suffering he's endured.

    • After Noah is finally free from the clutches of Grady Memorial, he encounters his walker brother in their old neighborhood who happens to be the one to bite Tyreese.
    • We also discover hints of yet another horrible group of people called The Wolves, who happened to be the ones who decimated Noah's hometown.
    • Tyreese's fever dreams reflect all the awful people he's encountered, the spoiled fruits of his mercy, and how upside down this world this world has become even when he's tried so hard to be a beacon for change.
    • ICYMI, the radio announcer voice at the end of the episode as the gang are driving frantically back to save Tyreese's life, is none other than Andrew Lincoln.
    • Bridget attributes Tyreese's passing to a choice - as much as everyone is trying their hardest to save him - especially after his fever dream of watching both people from his present and even notions of what the future might've held, be crushed. To have his delusions say that it's not only OK for him to let go but better for him to is this unexpected kindness that translates, in reality, to him forgiving himself for letting go after holding on so tightly to - not only life, but - humanity, all this time.

    • We're the ones who live: watching Tyreese let go with calm, while everyone around him struggles to carry him is what this show is essentially all about - we go on whilst carrying the memory and meaning of those who are left behind.

In all the years we've watched TWD, we've only come so close to the kind of spooky episode we received this week. Powerful performances delivered by Lauren Ridloff (AKA Connie) & Kevin T Carroll (AKA Virgil). And I think we're reaching an interesting turning point when it comes to Leah Shaw, Daryl Dixon, and The Reapers.
I cannot encourage you to download the unedited episode recording, enough. Since Aliza and I were the only hosts, I had such a lovely, long chat with her during the pre-show - almost worthy of it's own #TWDFamily Branches episode! We barely edited anything out of the episode and a lovely little post show, the whole of it is pretty short! Download it now and support the podcast! Click here:

  • Amazing performances with Lauren Ridloff & Kevin T. Carroll. If not for this being the final season, they should've excluded the Daryl Dixon & The Reapers scenes.
  • The knife parallel: Leah Shaw's/Pope's knife is given to Daryl; Virgil attempts to give his knife to Connie.
  • Leah & Daryl expressing their thoughts openly to Carver. Daryl chirped more in this episode than whole seasons.
  • Would Daryl kill Leah if he had to? Would Leah kill Daryl? With whom would either side if their family were threatened.
  • In actual terms, even though we really didn't see it, Daryl and Leah had a relationship. Carver may have "picked up the pieces" after Daryl ran off on Leah.
  • Not wanting to see Daryl with Leah is completely understandable. Daryl went from asexual to multiple love interests: Parallel with Lori Grimes (her love for Rick Grimes even when she moved on with Shane Walsh). And could Leah have run off because she was pregnant?
  • Did Frost rat out Daryl to Pope? How far has Pope unraveled? Comparing Pope's behavior with Carver to Theodore Maddox from Fear The Walking Dead and the treatment of his disciple Riley.
  • So yeah, Frost may not be a double-agent... Most likely. No old world loyalty among military brothers.
  • The only way to hook Carver is to give him some truth, "I'm only here for her." Leah's uncanny ability to know when Daryl is lying to her. Discussing this in the shadow of the Daryl & Carol Spin-Off.
  • The Walking Dead did Enders better than Z-Nation did: Illustrates the acceleration of society's breakdown. Negan mentioning how he would've done things differently is different than his Comic book counterpart.
  • When the Ferals spoiler image going around wasn't so much of a spoiler. Greg Nicotero's visual talent truly shining through. The clever bait-and-switch of us, like Virgil, thinking Connie was seeing things.
  • Connie insisting that family is also found, in spite of Virgil's desire to sacrifice himself so she can find Kelly. Drawing some parallels with Virgil and Michonne (keeping their family close, at first).
  • Will Virgil die? Will either Michonne or Rick show up on any of these #TWDUniverse programs? What about the Grimes children (Judith Grimes & RJ Grimes)?
  • FearTWD's nuke could explain the desolation throughout the kids' journey in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Also, timelines...!
  • Where do you think our survivors will end up? The Commonwealth?
  • Is a happy ending possible in The Walking Dead Universe? Also, The Civic Republic Military isn't very nice...
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan/Negan going down swinging (what spin-off?) and both The Commonwealth & The CRM outlasting the main series. Possibly crossover to FearTWD?
  • Looking back, Terminus cannibals started crazy early: Ferals are what happens when you take Termites to their logical conclusion (eating the dead/Kuru/Wasting Disease).
  • The Ferals might've been teenagers when the fall occurred and how the house eventually became a spider's web, rather than a home.
  • Experiencing a little backstory dialogue between Virgil & Connie when Kelly finds Connie's pad. Attempting to determine (Virgil's and) Connie's whereabouts for the past month.
  • Ominous conversation about King Ezekiel's health/future. Unweaving our characters' (Stephanie Vega, Eugene Porter, Fake Stephanie, and Tomi Okumura) web of lies (and whether they'll have consequences).
  • Yumiko Okumura is impressed that there is someone with the title "governor" in Pamela Milton. Meanwhile, we can't help thinking about Woodbury.

It's telling that this episode premieres just after the #TalesOfTheWalkingDead's Alpha origin story episode: instead of Doc Everett honoring his (more than just?) friend by wearing his face as a #Whisperers mask, he memorializes him by studying him. He does the same to Amy in similar fashion. "People are chaos" and we all have our own, personal ways of surviving and that's never been more apparent than in this episode, which further expands our vista in the ever-growing #TWDUniverse!

  • Aidan's Aside: All of this discussion of Alicia Clark makes me wonder what an interaction between Dr. Everett and Alicia Clark would be like. Could we potentially see Alicia and Dr. Everett meet? Even though Alycia Debnam-Carey left FTWD, it was open-ended, so it's still in her cards (though, she would appear much older after 35 years). • Aidan's Aside: I enjoyed the conversation everyone was having about Emily Dickinson. While I was watching this episode of Tales, I found myself frequently reflecting on the Apple TV+ series Dickinson starring Hailee Steinfeld. I highly recommend watching it. It also features Fear TWD alums, Chinaza Uche (who played Wes' brother, Derek, in Season 6) & Gus Halper (who played Will, in Season 7).

  • Dave compares Everett's study of Homo Mortuus to the way he studied Justin (played by Zach McGowan) in Season 9 of TWD. The opening sequence depicts his corpse being devoured by walkers. Midway into feeding, they suddenly stopped, got up, and walked away. Watching the exact moment walkers refuse to continue feeding indicates exactly when a dead human turns, which was super exciting and fascinating to watch for the first time in this universe.

  • Aidan's Aside: Our hosts often talk about the walker heads being used as a scare tactic in this episode. It reminds me of the border that Alpha establishes, delineated by way of our survivors loved ones heads on pikes, in the penultimate episode of The Walking Dead's ninth season. Maybe it's less of a scare tactic and more of a reminder of the potential horrors people are capable of in this world: if The Skull Hunters are chopping off walker heads, what else are they capable of doing to you?
